Quiet my exhaust / cold start
Quiet my exhaust / cold start
So I'll be moving into a townhouse with an HOA come Oct. and my cold start can be a bit obnoxious.
Currently I'm running a 3" catless x-pipe style exhaust with 2 resonators.
1) is there anything that can be done in terms of tuning to lose the cold start warm-up? I'm not running cats, so there is nothing to heat. Coming from the Bimmer world this was a pretty common feature to tune/code in
2) How much impact will 2 additional resonators make?

Any idea on "coding/tuning" out the cold start all together?
I actually have thought about adding a switch to kick the secondary air pumps on whenever I want even after the car is warm. I'd love to have the car rumble like cold start if I'm at a red light or cruising through town. Not sure if this is even possible or safe for the car.
I'm running a Speedtech 2.5 X-pipe. Which is amazing.

Dunno if this is relevant, but when you cold start, since the O2 sensors are not in closed loop, the default mixture is richer then normal. Hence, you will have more of a "hit" or explosion util the sensors go to closed loop. My TT booms a bit when first started. Takes a few minutes to "quiet" down. I have an exhaust with 100 cell cats and a tune.

If noise if your primary concern, move to a non-xpipe exhaust with cats. My fabspeed exhaust with cats (actually FS at the moment) was much quieter than my 3" resonated x pipe. I do feel bad cold starting my car in my garage at 730 in the morning (for my neighbors sake) but I'm not losing sleep over it. I'm trying to pull as much power out of the car as possible so a little bit louder cold start was worth it to me. If you aren't on upgraded turbos, you may want to try and find a catted setup. They are still throaty, but will be quieter in the mornings.
Or... just enjoy your car as is and don't let other people bring you down. Maintain a good relationship with your neighbors. You won't 'report' them for their kids being loud and obnoxiuos and they will let your loud "kid" slide. just my 2 cents.
Not sure which bmw you are talking about ,but i know my 335 has a muffler 'flap' that opens and closes dependent on throttle and cold/warm startup. I'd like to imagine the 'coding' you are referring to is someone turning off the opening of the flap on cold starts, as it does stay open. After about 30 seconds it closes on mine and gets a pinch quieter.

I haven't even moved in, but want to air on the side of caution and explore my options before I get a complaint.
The BMWs I'm referring to are M3s & M5s, so no flaps. It was something in the flashing process that eliminated the car's cycle of superheating the cats at start. Nearly every tuner for the E9x M3 & E60 M5 offered it as an option.

I imagine it could be done, but most tunes cost around $1500 or so...so how much do you want it?
I like the sound of that
