Currently searching for the perfect 996TT but have quickie question:

I will undoubtedly in the future do the Stage whatever upgrades to increase HP/torque so would it be a waste to get the X50. I'm not sure if the upgrades would essentially cancel out the X50 package or be in addition to?

thanks for any help

Frank, with the onset of hybrid turbos, you can really reduce the lag that the K24s bring to the table and still develop more horsepower. If you plan to mod (especially the turbos), you would be better off saving the extra $4-6k (?) that you would spend on the X50 over the K-16 based turbo. What is the asking price for an X50 over a standard turbo? Granted, you will get bigger intercoolers (10%?) and a beefier tranny (has this been confirmed?). It's up to you, honestly.

so i've searched the archives...

it appears that the X50 actually has less "pull" than a stock tt at RPM's less than 4000 and the power advantage is seen in the higher RPM's??? This had to be inferred from several posts/graphs

Does this sound right?

Basically, yes. Lag is the name of the game. The K24 turbos shine on the high end while the K16 turbos are great down low. Once the K24s spool, they are brutal, but the lag is a good bit more than the K16s. It really depends on where you want to sit with your RPMs - low (K16) or high (K24) or....both with a hybrid setup.

Stick with K-16's. Push the envelope and see if your willing to negate some driveability with lag and upgrade the turbos for more top end grunt.

Keep in mind if you can steal an x50 you are in great shape to mod because you don't need to change your turbos. Sure you may have some lag but once you get a new ecu and everything you will have so much power it won't be the end of the world. Basically if you want modding to be easier get X50 if you want the best performance money aside get K16s then do a hybrid later on.

Honestly, I would rather have the hybrids than the K24s. Even if I had K24s, I would probably get rid of them in search of a more streetable turbo setup (aka, hybrids of some type or ball bearing).
