I ran trough many post on 6speeds about the upsolete chips and most of the folks in here seems to be satisfied. Today, i got in touch with a local chip installer and found out that they have to open the computer and unweld a chip to read/write it ? Is this a normal procedure ? What about Giac chips. I think that welding and unwelding might not be a good thing to do considering the very thing main board they are welded to.

They do need to unsolder and remove the original chip, which did give me some concern. I did have mine done twice (one upgrade) nearly 2 years ago with no problem. One benefit - they gave me the original chip which I saved in case I ever want to return to stock.

 

Do you know if it's the same thing if I go with Giac ? Does it require unwelding ?

 

No, we do not desolder the chip. Everything done is flashloaded which means that we upload the info via software through the OBD2 port or on the bench. I have a harness from a 996TT in my office that I plug into the ECU and flash. No need to desolder anything.

 

Stephen... what about guys that have already gone through the older soldering process... is it as simple as getting a new computer and essentially starting over?

 

In most cases you should always have the original chip... the original file is always saved in the event you need/want to go back to stock.

I'm curious as to where and what shop you're thinking of using. I've been very anxious to start modding, but not being in the Toronto area all the Upsolute dealers I've reached aren't familiar with our cars. I'm in eastern ontario by the way.

Nice to hear from someone in Canada There is one guy in here who can do Upsolete. He seems to know the car well, still, I did not met him yet (but what he said on the phone sounds ok to me). Also, I have another specialized speedshop who does the Giac, but the Upsolete is 900CAD and giac 2200CAD....

Where are you in Ontario ? I'm in Montreal area

No, if you have the solder version it would have to be swaped back to stock then flashed. No need to buy another ecu.

I'm just under an hour west of Montreal. Those prices you were quoted sound pretty damned good considering the relative price difference and the canadian dollar attached. Would you mind disclosing the name of the speedshop that offers the chipping?

P.S. i'm assuming you lost the m-roadster? heh, I sure did.
