Can you pass emissions without secondary air pump?

Like the title says, can you pass emissions without having a secondary air pump on the engine? I know the secondary air pump only comes into play and functions upon start up, but will the car throw any codes without the pump installed? I'm assuming a check engine light will show up. Can it be coded out and still have the car remain emission compliant and have all the readiness codes met? For simplicity sake, I am thinking about getting rid of the pump and it's associated plumbing while my engine is getting rebuilt. Thoughts, comments, etc...

Just answered this in another thread. Can be coded out with a ROW tune. Won't throw a code and doesn't Impact emission readiness

I doubt any of us with modified cars can run stock ROW tunes unfortunately. A ROW car is not US emissions compliant if I'm not mistaken.

The test in my state is similar to Cali. They won't put the car on the rollers because they think it's AWD and would damage the diff. They just do the idle tailpipe test and plug into the obd...

ROW based tune removes the table for the secondary air all together. I have a proto tune that is based of an ROW tune.

Or, the table can be changed, so that the secondary air doesn't turn on, because of temps.

Both stop a CEL being thrown.

i don't have any secondary air, cats i have a file on the dme that shows readiness codes every time i cycle the key.( modified vw file) for TN you have to go to a government garage were they look for cats,( every time i go they shove a mirror under the front wheels see the shields and put it away!) then pressurize the gas cap and then plug in to obdII and check for codes and readiness. pass every time. now is it 50 state legal? doubt it

Interesting. I was under the impression that when you car is flashed the OEM tune is overwritten.

overwritten - yes, but 90% of it is the same. (That's not to say it's not a lot of work, but most of the tables that have no effect on fuel, timing or boost are left the same) The tuner can either start with a ROW tune and modify or a U.S. tune.

Todd at proto has tunes for both, along with any other tuner that has tunes for anyone outside of the US.

In Kalifornia they are required to do a visual inspection and if the pump is missing or disconnected you will fail

Was thinking of deleting the pump/pluming as well. Any details on exact parts to remove/modify? thanks
