I have my transaxle out for a clutch job and figured perfect time to put some fresh oil in.
I did some searching on the forums and saw a lot of recommendations for Mobil Delvac 75w90. Others just said any 75w90 is good as long as its synthetic.
I saw if you have a GT2 it must have friction modifier or if you've added a locker to your turbo car. I don't think it hurts anything to have friction modifier without a locker or spool in there.
Well no Mobil gear oil at my local auto parts but I did find some Royal Purple and they carry quite the reputation for good oils so I grabbed it. Before I toss it in and cause any issues figured I'd double check. This should be good stuff right?
don't want any friction modifiers for either GT2 or TT, our LSD's do not need it and synchro's don't like it....I personally stay a long way away from R.P.....
the only time it is important not to have any friction modifiers in the gear oil is if running an lsd. beyond that folks will argue gear oils as vehemently as regular oils but at the end of the day, a good 75/90 gear oil is, just that.
most use delvac 75/90 with an lsd and many more are happy with liqui moly or redline 75/90. used redline 75/90 for years to great effect. then installed a wavetrac and was advised to ONLY use the delvac but redline also makes one with no slip additives.
six of one...... you know the rest.
per robs point which i just saw as i posted... the gt2 needs to have oil without friction modifiers, the tt can use standard gear oil 75/90 such as redline and it's fine.
it is ( i am told..? ) only imperative if one is running with an lsd that NO modifiers be added, hence the reliance upon redline 75/90 and the like.

Cool thanks, looks like I can pickup Delvac on ebay for about $60 a gallon. Actually cheaper than the RP I got. Pelicanparts has Red Line for $70. I read good things about both of those when doing some searches. I guess I should quit been impatient and return this RP and just order one and wait for it.
Humm OK well glad I asked. So find something decent with no friction modifiers is what I'm gathering. Where do you guys find delvac?
the closest place for M1 delvac for you is luftenic but suncoast also carries at roughly the same price.
remember though.. if you are NOT running an LSD! you dont need to concern yourself with friction modifiers +/-! you can run oils with additives e.g. REDLINE 75/90 is GREAT oil for the trans.. the MOBIL ONE DELVAC - ( WITHOUT! ) lol friction modifiers,.. is what any of us with an lsd or a torque basing differential MUST run.

I get Delvac directly from my local Mobil distributor. $160 for a 5 gallon pail... They also sell it in 1 gallon containers. Last time they actually sent me 5x1gallon bottles instead of the pail.

You know that brings up a great question. Does my car have an lsd in it or not? I purchased the car used with quite a few other upgrades so its hard to know. I have the transaxle out the car on the ground right now. Is there a way to tell by turning the out put points where the half shafts connect or something? If I spin one the other spins the opposite way freely which tells me it's an open diff with no lsd... I think lol.

ask pwdrhound how to tell lol. it wouldn't stock, thats for sure. if had to venture a guess? i'd say it doesn't and you are stock back there.
yes, if one wheel spins freely while driving its open diff and no lsd! correct.

does NOT matter if you have LSD or not...no friction modifiers...
check for LSD by turning one drive hub, the other will turn in same direction if LSD'd, opposite direction if open diff.

Thanks. No LSD here, they turn opposite directions. I'll grab either the Red Line or Delvac. Seems to be tried and tested and approved by most. Not trying to re-invent the wheel. Thanks!
