Who is running Bilstein B8 shocks with H&R springs?
#17
I was just about to post a question asking about B8's but noticed this thread. My stick ROW shocks are leaking so I'm considering a refresh or update. I'm not in the US so my car has the ROW suspension that already sits quite nicely - not much wheel arch gap. I was going to retain the original springs and go with B6 dampers but I am also considering some H&R springs with B8's.
Excuse the hijack, but what do you think I should go with? Is there a need to replace the springs assuming they are not cracked etc? Will the H&R springs lower it further than my ROW springs?
Thanks

All depends on the ride height you want. If you are happy with your ROW ride height then as long as the springs aren't cracked or rusting badly, you can re-use them. Just purchase either new ROW dampers or the B6/B8 dampers (B8 damper with have a slightly firmer/sportier ride). If you want your car to be a little lower, then pick up the H&Rs with the B8 dampers. Perfect ride height IMO and really good ride and handling.

I ran into that too and they ended up shipping from AJUSA sooner than expected. They are worth waiting for IMO. If you want to check out the ride/handling on my car, let me know.

Already picked up fronts and tarret front top hats. Just need the rears, figured you guys wouldn't steer me wrong and started accumulating.

Have been running on Bilstein B8 all summer. Great improvement over OEM. OEM had a floating feeling...not good. B8 are shorter than OEM. I am still getting front end rise on acceleration, more than desired. Just picked up H&R and will install.

I'm also on B8's and H&R springs. The B8's are the equivalent to the M030 shocks, and the H&R springs are also roughly the same ride height, only about .25 to .5 inches lower, though I am not sure about how the spring rates compare to the M030 setup.
I had coilovers on other cars before and frankly I just didn't want to mess with them and just wanted a good handling solution with no fuss. The B8's and H&R springs meet that criteria perfectly.

^ agree on the combo, but mine on mo30's and h&r reds is lowered about -40mm. its pretty low but suits my canyon needs well. good to know the b8 is the contemporary equivalent, as that'd be my first choice when time to replace as well.

For me, I think the rear is dropped about 1.5 and the front 1.25-1.5. I bought my car and they were already installed so I have no before/after comparison, only comparing with a friend's stock tt.
At any rate, the B8's with shorter springs go a long way towards improving the handling, but then again, my stock shocks had ~60k on them, so even a stock replacement would probably have been an improvement as well.

yeah, mines about 1.5 lower..and iirc(?) that difference btw their lowering amount estimates could be the differential btw the various rates of the ( three, that i know of? ) options in lowering springs they offer for our platform. mine ( again ) are the red "sport" spring generally agreed to be the best mid-level compromise for a street driven car, and they do offer a full 1.5 inch drop. though the older they get, obviously, the more they will sag. the race springs aren't really optimal for a street driven car as they are at least a 2" drop.

OK, PIC of H&R Springs with Bilstein B8. Was running stock springs with B8. What a vast improvement. Much more comfortable ride, more stable, no float, little if none front end rise on execration. Ride height is excellent, just enough to get out of incline driveway. DIY install. Did not remove any ball joints. Just disconnect front axel and remove strut. This is an excellent setup for street use.

^ ride height in your "after" pics still look a bit high to me, but maybe it's the angle. speaking of high the front wheel arch looks as if what we used to call a three finger lid would fit in there lol. I'm sure the springs'll settle some, though.
