More carnage....

After 5 months in hibernation, I finally got the car to the shop to rework the fuel system. After we got everything squared away, I went out to do a quick test drive to make sure the fuel pressure alarms are set correctly. Drove the car about 5 minutes and on the way back to the shop got on the power in third gear to get a good fuel pressure log under boost. As soon as the boost hit I heard a loud bang and lost all power coasting into an empty parking lot. Initially I thought something in the engine had failed as the dash lit up with an "over rev" warning. The engine however continued to run fine but there was no transfer of power to the wheels. The over rev was simply the enertia of the accelerating engine taking it through the fuel cut off limiter. Since I was only 1/4 mile from the shop it only took 15 minutes to get towed in and up on the lift. It quickly became apparent that the left gearbox output flange had failed. The failure is pretty amazing considering the thickness of steel in the failed area which in this case only sees torque and no lateral G, unlike wheel hubs which I seem to be eating for breakfast also. While at it we are going to swap out the right flange also. Luckily my shop has these on hand so we should have this wrapped up tomorrow as I'm scrambling to get the car ready for a track event this weekend. Looks like this is just another item I'm adding to the precautionary 2 year replacement along with the rear hubs. The flanges are relatively cheap and something to consider as precautionary replacement for the guys with higher horsepower who track these car's heavily. Metal fatigue eventually rears it's ugly head on 15 year old parts. The only good thing is these are just about the last parts that have not yet been swapped on my car's drivetrain.

I have a company that will likely be making hubs for me out of 300M. Might have them look at doing these also. Interestingly I've never had any issues with axles but I replaced those last year. Cup cars on the other hand go through axles frequently.

Nice, something I may have to look into when I build the trans on my car. Axles I thought about upgrading but then I thought about it, I'd rather break and axles than a gear in the trans.
