Hi all,

New to this forum. My dad owns a 996 Turbo (2001, 35k miles). The ecu was flashed and it has a Tubi exhaust. He was boosting around 1.3 bar until recently. The car began stuttering/hesitating/losing power on full throttle. This was happening in 3rd or 4th gear around 4k rpm. It felt like a misfire and would only pull about .4 bar. No CEL. (No boost leaks)

He took it took 2 dealerships and 1 independent shop. They told him it was the clutch, no doubt. They replaced the clutch (almost $5 grand), spark plugs, and MAF. He told them from the start it feels like it wasn't getting enough fuel.

After spending about $6500, he was ready to get rid of it. He thought he had a lemon. I asked him to let me have a crack at it. (I've never worked on a Porsche, but have done all kinds of work on my A4 and VW's).

I started with the fuel pressure regulator - the screen was damaged, so we replaced that. Still had the hesitation.

Thanks to this forum and hours of reading and searching - I came across a post that showed a crack in the black hose on the original fuel pump. After investigating, I found the same crack on our fuel pump hose.

I replaced it myself today and she's running like a beast again. I felt impelled to post about this because it took a while to find a post with similar issues to help diagnose the problem. And I'm pissed that he spent almost $7,000 for a $520 DIY fix because of misdiagnosis. Nobody thought to check the fuel pressure (which I did).

BTW - the fuel pump has been upgraded by Porsche and no longer has the black rubber/silicone hose that failed.

Good job getting that sorted out for your dad. At least he has a brand new clutch now.

 

Had the same issue earlier this year. Replaced fuel pump and had a clogged fuel line...that fixed the problem.

Mine ruptured so bad, the pump was pumping the fuel back into the fuel tank...LOL This happened twice (under warranty) until my mechanic finally used a fuel line made by Gates and replaced that section of tubing.

 

clutch? because of missfire? - clutch would slip (rpm's would jump) not create missfire. I almost wanted to say, but you figured it out. ~ check fuel pressure first, that's #1 , yeah my fuel pump gave out few weeks ago, not the hose that split/burst open - but no pressure in the fuel system! checked the fuse, checked the relay, pump was priming!, but it was not building any pressure - had to tow the car home after replacing fuel pump I was back on the road, amazing right? how much time and money we can save by fixing things our self's otherwise it would cost an arm and leg at the dealer.

Any idea if the problem you had would've been found had you checked fuel pressure with gauge?

 

Yes- I believe I mentioned that. It was several years ago, but pretty sure fuel pressure was low.

it was easy to access the pump and visual inspection confirmed right away.
