Dodged a bullet . . . 991
Dodged a bullet . . . 991
Had a wild hair yesterday and foolishly took a ride over to the local Porsche dealer on Stevens Creek, I ran into this beauty:
2013, Carrera S, 24k miles @ $85k
Not a steal, but a beautiful car with factory aero and optioned up, down and sideways
The fit and finish was amazing! Not blistering fast, but extremely usable power at all meaningful RPM points, the updated electronics were tremendous, as were the seats and the overall layout of the dash. The 991 was super-easy to drive; though while I had read about this, it does feel significantly larger than the 996. The exhaust was intoxicating. I have to admit, I was enamored-- With that, I needed to "think about it", I'm glad I did
I drove the GMC yesterday, so I promptly went home and pulled out the 2002. I've been driving her in the winter mist and wet roads, so she is a bit of a mess, brake dust is the new name for my wheel color and it's weeks past her bath time. Yep, it's been lived in and not very shiny, but wow . . . SO much more involved than the 991. I get it's not a fair comparison, but just a little earlier in the day, I was thinking pretty seriously about selling the 996 to "upgrade", that would have been a mistake:
-The S wasn't blistering, the Turbo is (chipped)
-The S feels "huge", putting my right elbow on the window sill, made me feel like a 10 year old at the adult's table HaHa
-The 7 speed was extremely easy to row and it was rowing (I have an SSK), I would have missed the notchiness, but I'm sure that could be easily remedied; the shifter feels perched too high - I hit the hazard button multiple times
-I really like my PSS9s, even in the stiffest mode, the S felt soft
I talked to my kids about what I was thinking about (12 and 9), their only question . . . "Is it faster? No? Then why?" I guess, it's hard to argue with that kind of logic, kids have a way of boiling things down
Maybe I will keep my eye out for a 997 Turbo, I have been seeing them for $10k less than the S I drove yesterday, who knows . . . Or maybe just be happy with what I have--
Not sure if that is possible, but thought I would share my experiece with you folks and give you a short read. Our cars are pretty special; the 991 does refined very, very well; I think I'd rather have a bit of sass, KH

Fixed wing and flows very well with the body and the front bumper, I thought it was gorgeous! Really reminded me of the mini-whale tail we have on our cars
That's a bummer-- I haven't dealt with their service, so I don't know what to say. I go to an independent in Los Gatos and I would recommend them every day of the week, thanks-- KH
The 996 has a rawness factor to it that is a lot of fun. The newer cars are nicer, better, and faster but not really any more fun over a 996. My brother in law has a Mustang Cobra collection. He has a 2004 that rattles and flexes as it drives down the road and is a totally raw driving experience. His new Cobra is faster and nicer but I still like to drive his 04 more. Same kind of thing.

Which shop do you go to in Los Gatos? Dons? BR Racing?
i fully empathize with your struggle. i'm having the same issue with my desire for a '17 c2s.
but i won't sacrifice the old girl to get it. she's too raw to replace and i could never train the 991 to do the things this one will

I remember this article from Chris Harris that talks about why he likes the 996. Just a good car to drive. http://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/...-ph-blog/27663

Before I bought my Turbo, I test drove a 997.2 Carrera S PDK. It was fast and handled well, but didn't "push my buttons". I'm so glad I passed otherwise I would never have bought the TT.
