Because of so many anecdotes like those shared by geetee, I'm most likely to take Pwdrhounds advice and send mine to BBI. They gave me an acceptable quote over the phone. I also got the impression that they have done many successfully, plus they're well known in the porsche tuning community - I guess I'm a sucker for pedigree. I just have to remove the manifolds and ship to California. They supply the inserts and cleaning/welding labor.

Take your time, lots of pictures, especially of the routing of the sense lines...I took hundred of pictures while doing mine and if you need any help do not hesitate to ask.... Do not save on cheap o-rings even if one of them is over $10.00 (the one for the fuel line, color beige part#99970750640). You don't want, the ones under the oil cooler, to leak after the engine installation ;-)

It has begun!

I'm going to take my time working on it. I'll try to keep this post up to date, especially if I run across anything interesting or unusual. Thanks for the support. Click image for larger version

Careful. I put a big wood stump under the car as a safety precaution. Don't trust those stands, have a backup.

You can lift it higher once the motor is out, it will be light.

You're totally right. The stands in the rear are almost maxed out and the bottom of the engine case is only about 18" from the floor, i.e. not high enough... I will be swapping them for taller ones. Good looking out.

I do it with the lower stands. Once the motor is out you just take your floor jack and lift the back higher, drag the motor and trans out, then set it back down on the stands.

LOVE My MaxJax. Car was on it tonight getting new intercooler inlet hoses. Didn't even get dirty.

I'd love to. Putting the car on stands is a huge time waster and PITA, however maxjax are not in my current parts budget

I'm sure I'll be able to justify them one day, but for now I'm stuck doing it the hard way.

I take my wheels off and put them under the car as a safety measure. They are wider than i am.

Lookup wood cribbing, it's not hard to make, it's cheap, and it's safe. You can use it under the jackstands and lower the extensions so it's not too wobbly. Under the front wheels is a good place for it too and built right the cribbing can be stacked so you can raise the car high slowly. You're probably going to want to use an HF hydraulic to drop the motor and to get it in there is going to require a bunch of height.

I second placing wheels under the car too! I do this on all cars when I yank a wheel so if a jack or stand slips the wheel prevents a crush.

Look up " liftbars.com ". A friend of mine uses these. They are amazing. Great alternative and easy to use. Cost between 250 - 300. Their are other manufacturers of course.

Sorry about your initial issue but I like where this thread is going. Lots of good tips already. Tires under the car is a great one. I'm always nervous about the stands failing when I'm under my car and pulling on something with a wrench. Can you imaging getting killed by your Porsche while not even driving it?
