What other models share transmission with 996tt?

Including any that may just need certain components swaped

Our transmission is a 6 speed development of the G50 variant transmission. Over the years the G50 variant has gone through many changes inside and out. The closest is that on the 997TT, GT3 and GT2 but they both have significant changes that go beyond simple bolt on items. The GT2 and GT3 are almost identical with slightly different gearing. The 997TT has a stronger main shaft and steel synchros(iirc). The 996TT and GT2 are mostly the same with the GT2 having steel synchros, oil pump and 6th gear cooling which is in the form of a different gear case section towards the end where our shaft flange for the fwd diff is. Also the bell housing on the GT2/3 are drilled and studded for manual slave versus the assisted slave.

96/97/TT/GT2/3/Cup manual gearboxes are all G50 variants with exception of the 997TT which is a totally different gearbox and shares almost nothing with the G50.

Not to disagree with you, but if you look in the parts catalogs both the 996TT(and GT variants) and the 997TT variants have about the same amount of non G50 respective model(996 or 997) specific part numbers. But they are both developed from the G50 (997tt included). From the same perspective if you look at the 964 gearboxes you will see a fair amount of 964 parts even though the gearbox was literally a G50. They were in a constant state of improvement and development from the start on the same basic design.

Me thinks that John means 997.2's box. Then there's tiptronics too.

No, the 997TT gearbox is actually different. The 997.1TT can't use components from the 997GT2 like we can for upgrades, it doesn't work in that gearbox.

Just like the 964 can't use a ton of 996TT or GT2 parts. Yet they are both G50 derivatives. What is it about the 997TT transmission that makes it not G50 derivative?

The point is the thread starter wanted to know which cars had transmission that could share components, not which cars had a transmission that is similar in design/name, but doesn't use the same parts and the parts won't swap.

I stand corrected...997 turbo's transmission seems to be different.

I wish I could copy paste the parts listing here so you could see all the transmission parts starting with 996 and 950 in the 997TT transmission so you can see my point. The gears and shafts are all 997 specific. I am not saying that they are not different. I am just saying that being completely different is as much true as being a G50 derivative. What is it that makes a 997TT transmission completely different or not compatible or convertible to ours? Just because swapping a gearset over to our transmissions is not possible? Perhaps a bearing support and/or mainshaft is needed to convert? Is the bell housing pattern or axle flange pattern different? Educate me, because I am not seeing what the defining difference beyond.

I don't know exactly what parts do or don't fit, my friend has a 997TT and complains that if he breaks his transmission the best he can do is rebuild it with stock parts and break it again until someone makes stronger internals for it. It's a different case/different internal webbing for sure. Mainshaft and what have you that can be swapped between 996TT/GT2, and 997GT2 does not fit in the 997TT casing no matter what you do from what I understand.

Yes many part numbers things here and there are the same in the PET and the internal number ends in .50, and the transmission is still similar and it will swap to the 996TT, but the "important" parts are not interchangeable.

Comparing the G50 race bred trans to the 997TT trans is akin to comparing a Mezger to the 7.2TT DFI engine. A similar layout with a few common parts in either pair but totally different animals overall. You won't find anyone building a race motor out of a DFI just like you won't find anyone building a race trans out of a 7TT box.

7TT box is a better box out the gate than a 6TT box tho. much smoother driving, triple synchros in every gear which is what makes it slightly longer and not being able to use gt2 gears. cases are stronger as well. there were many improvements to the 997tt box. it was never used in any race cars which is why there are no upgraded parts for it .... yet.

It's been 10 years since the 7TT came out. Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath....
