Should I drop the engine?
Should I drop the engine?
Looking for some wisdom, I have an 02 996 turbo I am finally in a position to work on. I am planning on new turbos/exhaust/injectors, replace a leaking oil line, and the car needs a new clutch. I guess my question is, would it be easier to just go ahead and drop the entire driveline and get everything done with the engine out?? I have a hydraulic table and the exhaust/turbos/rear bumper/intercoolers etc are already off of the car. Thanks in advance
100% yes. It's fairly straight forward and will make all of the work you mentioned soooooo much easier! Just make sure you do it all while it's out and dont rush the reinstall.

Pin or weld the coolant fittings, replace the coolant res, replace the idler pulley bearings, possibly change hoses, possibly change the vacuum lines and zip tie them, new DV valves, clean the FPR, new water pump. What else am I missing?

There is a good post in this section with a list of items to be considered while the engine is out. It's a must read! I did pretty much the whole list two years ago when I pulled my drivetrain.
2 things I screwed up on removing my engine that are good to know:
There is a bolt on the top left intake manifold that holds the air intake in place. Remove that bolt because sometimes the intake pipes catch and it can crack the manifold.
Carefully remove the power steering line from the press in fitting thing on the ps res tank. If you scratch it the hose will not seal and you have to buy an overpriced new one.

Yes. Its made to come out easily. I can have the whole thing dropped within a few hours its so easy. With that much work you will hate yourself if you dont drop it out. Its not made for much of any service when in the car
Be really careful if you are doing the jack stand method. I put a large wood block under the car just to be sure that if it falls it will not crush me. Lots of people die under cars on jack stands.
Got my 1000 pound hydraulic table today from Harbor Freight for roughly $200. Have everything ready to drop the engine other than the upper starter bolt is frozen. Soaking with PB Blaster overnight, if that doesnt get it can take apart the passenger side rear suspension to make room for the drop.
