I Just ordered 5 newer style 997 coil packs and longer screws, but what are you guys using for cylinder number 5? My 996T coils are original and need to ALL be replaced. Thx
I think I have figured this out. A member Third-Reef, said he just used a typical hex bolt and was able to get all the new coil packs to fit. Makes sense to me because a socket has no way of going over that bolt, but an open end wrench should be much easier.
There is a DIY thread that discusses this in detail. I replaced all 6 of mine last year but don't have the PNs handy. I suggest you also change the plugs and brackets while you are in there.
This coil issue has become the munchausen by proxy syndrome for 996 turbos lol. the correct coils and bolts and part numbers for ALL the same have already been posted in the other thread.
My last step is just getting hex bolts that fit. I have never had to remove my bumper for any jobs on my 996T so far. I think the new male bolts just make it more difficult. The no. 5 cylinder thing seems to be most related to the Beru coil packs and the type of bolt. Just need the bolts and I'll have everything I need. At least for now. Guessing I'll be replacing the no. 16 valve soon too. Haven't done the leak testing yet. Not all in the other thread BTW some coils go right in for some, but not for others?
my recollection is that it's only a fit issue with the heat shields vis a vis the longer bolts etc. bumpers and ic's etc gotta come of either way, to properly get at them. at the risk of repeating myself ... it's so much easier to just get the beru coils with the 997 part # as they come with the longer bolts.
re the 16 ck valve? you'll hear it hissing if and when you pressure test at 20psi. if it aint broke? dont fix it lol
Good to hear. I'm just guessing by TONS of boost leak test vids I have seen, seems no. 16 is ALWAYS blown, so just keeping that in mind. Wonder why no.5 coil is such a problem for some, but not others? Thx guys. Everything has been ordered and I have what I need to do the boost test now. Even if she feels perfect, I'm gonna check everything that I can. I love this car. Thx again and peace out for at least a wk or so.
I'm in an '03 and did not have any trouble with the new style coils (997-602-104-02). #5 was a little tight so I wedged a screwdriver against the pipe just to move it a hair. Worked out perfectly. I used 1/4 inch E10 sockets. One long and one short and some wobble extensions.
Be careful to inspect your coils before putting them in. I had one with a broken Tang where you plug it in. Its a real S.O.B getting the plug in on some. Make sure they snap in correctly. Be gentle.
I was involved in starting this posting the pic above. Another forum member convinced me just bending that tube out of the way to make room if necessary is acceptable. It seems to vary by car. Or you could source an old style coil from your dealer as I did, or reuse your best old one.
AHHHHH!!! I just got my coil packs from ECS Tuning and 3 of the 6 have the connector tabs (tang as shown above) broken off! Are they trustworthy? No problems asking for replacements, but 3 broken out of 6? I'm so frustrated. They are Bremi coils for 997. The guys on the BMW forums say they are getting over 100K on those. The coil packs use the standard bolt size too, so fitting under the No.5 cylinder water line should be no problem. They DO need to have the plastic connector tabs on them though!!!! Are these trash? I know the ones with broken tabs are, but anyone else have nonfunctional Bremi coils?

Reason: correction
That's a ***** ! I was pissed when it happened to me. Wanted to get it done so I had them ship next day air.
Those may be someone else's returns. Guys struggle to put the connector in and break them. Some guys use tie wraps extra precaution and some due to broken clips. Not me ! Porsche made it that way for a reason. I would hate to put it back together and have a connector come loose. Misfire and your back to square one.
That's just me.
