2004 Turbo Cab Recommendations?
2004 Turbo Cab Recommendations?
Hi all,
I've got the serious hots for a new turbo cab. I'm trying to decide on a matrix of options. Here they are:
Normal vs. X50
6-speed vs Tiptronic
I have a 1999 996 cab 6-speed and a 2001 996TT Tip w/out X50.
This car is going to be a share-a-ride with my wife (don't snicker behind my back; she's done laps at Mid-Ohio). The 1999 996 cab will go away.
She's the major proponent of the 6-speed, but says it's not real important to her if the new car is a 6-speed or Tip. I got the Tip in the '01 TT because I wear 36" inseam trousers (6'4") and have a hard time heel-and-toeing in the '99 cab because of the console-vs-leg room problem, ... but it's not super bad. I could easily live with the 6-speed, but I like the Tip.
My question has to do with driveability issues with the X50 motor option and turbo lag. I think I remember a thread about the X50 having more lag, and I wonder if the 6-speed or the Tip would be a better match for the X50 and whether the power increase is noticable during non-track driving? This car will likely never make it to a track.
Thanks in advance for all your input,
Mike - Cincinnati

Thanks Soon2be,
It's not the clutch, it's the contortions of my right leg to get the ball of my foot on the brake while the right heel goes on the gas -- my calf and/or knee crashes into the console. Maybe I'll have to have surgery to adapt to it?

I am all for mods believe me - but in the end when it comes to resale - I do believe a true factory x50 will hold up in value better than a tuner conversion - unless it has a new vin like a ruf - but if you dont care about resale we know plenty of people for you that would love to make a TT cab 600+HP

"I agree, you can do the same HP, for a lot less aftermarket!"
According to Porsche, there is also transmission upgrading included in the X50 (something none of the tuners do at that pricepoint). The X50 is probably still a smart thing to get EVEN IF you plan on furthering modifying. Plus, you start out with more hp/lb (many say it's more than what's quoted) as your base from which to mod. Further, you get GT2 turbos and intercoolers.

Resale on the X50 is about $3 to $4k. So I'd say you can just blow off resale value for that option (as is the case with most options).

I intend to be one (as well as dropping about 300 lbs) :-)
