Gearbox input shaft axial play
Gearbox input shaft axial play
Does anyone have a good working 996TT manual transmission out or their car and can check their input shaft play? (axial = longitudinal)
Have a good working box w appr 100k miles from a car that ran its life with stock turbos, flash, ICs. It has some axial play, looks like ~1/16. No radial play.
The box also has no need for a 2nd gear shift detent fix.
I had two 996TTs and 4 different transaxles over time on those two but never once did I ever check the input shaft play so I just don't know what's normal.
I did notice on my 2002 with low mileage ~20k miles, the shifting was notchy and unpleasant.
On my 2001 with high miles (70-77 during my ownership iirc) it shifted really nicely. Later got a 2003 box with around 48k into that same car (had a "built" biox in it for a while in betweem), and that 2003 box felt nice too.
So thinking based on the high mileage 2001 feeling more relaxed and clean shifting that maybe some mileage and reasonable amount of play is normal.
.
Looking for some real hard data, if anyone has their non modified box out and can check play.
It's going into a project car and before I put it in would be nice to know what is in normal range.

Play measured with proper tools came out to be 15-20 thousands (felt and looked like more). No concern according to two separate Porsche transaxle builders I spoke to this morning.
