Problem with clutch pedal.

I posted this on Rennteam a few days ago......your thoughts?

Hi guys, this is my first post. Hope you can give me some feedback. I have a 2001 996TT and the past few days, I have noticed that the clutch pedal takes slightly more effort to press down. There has always been a clicking sound/feel when I press the pedal but it seems to be a little louder and a little stiffer than usual. The pedal feels normal when it's in neutral but as soon as the car's moving and the gears are engaged, this is where I notice the difference. I've also noticed that, in the past few days, when I come up to a stop and press the clutch pedal, the car just dies on me and I'd have to restart it (it's happened around 3 times so far). Besides that, everything seems fine...there's no slipping and the car seems to run smoothly. Any thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

How many miles on the clutch? The clicking sound is normal...it is the switch to let you start the car when the clutch is depressed. As for the clutch getting more stiff, I would think you may need to replace the clutch soon. My mechanic told me that my clutch (28k miles) was starting to slip also about 2 months ago, but I have not felt one instance of slippage.
As for your stalling problem, have you cleaned your MAF or done any new mods? Obviously your idle is off. Anyway some of the pros should be able to help you out some more. Best of luck!

I had mine replaced (and I believe that Dock did as well)... the fault: clutch accumulator. Arg, I wish that search worked. I had the same type of symptoms, though.

I just had my clutch replaced on my 01 TT at 30K miles - do you feel the click or just hear a click - a slightly notchy feeling click means either the slave rod or release arm is getting dry. For the accumulator, try turning car off and pressing the clutch pedal 5 times, it should not increase in stiffness (my new one allows 10 times). I had lived with a bad accumulator w/o knowing it because I thought stiffness after engine was off was normal - actually its a sure sign of a failing accumulator. While you are pressing with engine off, listen for any creaking sounds from bellhousing as the pedal is coming back up. I just received an (involuntary) crash course in clutch creaking, effort, what feels normal vs. what does not, etc a few weeks ago for 4000.00, so I can share what I know.

I had a bad accumulator as well, and thanks to a similar post cost me $350 to fix rather than the $2.5k rebuild the mechanic was insisting on

The accumulator is the first place to check, then slave - after that $$$$.....

As for the stalling problem, I cleaned my MAF yesterday and the car runs a lot smoother now. The car hasn't stalled yet but it's only been a day and a half. Hopefully it stays that way.

Do you test it when the car's cold or when it's been shut off after driving for a bit?

I haven't tested it with the car cold yet but after driving, it feels like I can get about 4 or 5 good pumps without an increase in stiffness. I didn't hear any creaking noise either. Just the clicking/racheting sound and feel. It didn't feel like it before but now, almost everytime I'm switching gears, it feels like I'm pushing through fine gravel.

BTW....how much (approx.) would the labor cost me if I were to replace the accumulator?

The slave should be fine....I know a brand new slave was installed right before delivery. That was about a month ago.

If the accumulator or slave check valve is bad It will loose assist after sitting a couple of days. A good system should give over 10 assisted clutch depressions after sitting overnight.

So I did the check after the car was sitting overnight. I turned the car on for 20 sec and then shut it off. I got 4 clutch depressions in before I felt more resistance. Does that mean it's time to replace it?

I think you should get about 10 depressions after sitting overnight without starting it.
