I think one of the main advantages would be that you would not have the take the 996tt stub axels off the cv joint/axels and then put them back in when you convert the car back to AWD.

But then also, how could you modify what your pressing out to make the C2 stub axel's fit, seems like there will be quite some work involved switching back either way!

I dunno about making the C2 stub axels fit because as soon as we found out they didnt into the wheel hub they told me we could use the existing stub axels if they took them out of the cv joints (took them 30 minutes to take both out and I'm guessing it'd take 30-60 minutes to put both back in).

Yea makes sense, i was just going by what Stephen mentioned "
Wow, well the only thing we have done different was press out the bearing and use the standard C2 bearing. This is why the stub axels will not fit the other way."

Humm, I guess that would mean you'd have to buy the C2 stub axels and C2 wheel bearings (those 2 parts would run you over $500). I do remember them showing me that the C2 stub axels didnt fit into the wheel hub though because it was a larger diameter than the 996tt one...

Yea your way seems MUCH more time and cost efficient, i just wonder why Stephen said he used the other way, if there were any benefits and so on!

Sorry for the late reply. I was celebrating 13 years with my wife tonight (23 total!)

I press the bearing out. The bearing sleeve diameter... that is the issue and why it will not fit. The pressed in race is the same size, the diameter of the hole for the NA and TT are different. So the bearing will press in to the hub, they just won’t fit the same axel.

As far as what is right and wrong. The way they have done it is fine. I simply like it to look like the factory would have done it. Like the nose cover. I don't want people looking at my work and know I was there. I want them to ask if the car was built this way. But then again I have never been known to take the easy way or short cut.

No worries and thank you!!

It is too easy for us. In fact the only regret I have is that we continue to get older which means I have less than more days with her...Besides, she has put up with me all these years. Hell, she should get an award!!

How do you dismantle a CV join axle without the ***** and grease coming out and making a mess out of it? Probably there a part number for the stub axke alone. How much is it?

The shop took the 996tt stub axel out of the cv joint. They cleaned out the grease and pleased the ***** into a small plastic bag. I'm not sure how much the 996tt stub axel (tension bolt) is but the C2 stub axels were about $145/each. Hope that helped.

I have a part number for the GT2 stub axel. Don't know if it will fit the TT..

996 341 131 90 - Tension Bolt - Qty 2 - GT2
996 341 131 01 - Tension Bolt - Qty 2 - 911 996 M338 (I guess C2)
