TechArt Steering Wheel

I am interested in a smaller, THICKER steering wheel. I know of the TechArt steering wheel and I have a slew of questions. Hopefully, you guys can shed some light on this.
  1. What diameter is our stock wheel?
  2. Who sells the TechArt wheels?
  3. It appears the TA wheels come in two sizes, 340mm and 320mm. It also seems they both incorporate airbags. I like small wheels, does anyone know of any detrimental aspects of the 320mm wheel? Here is a page with their wheels:
    http://www.techart.de/Programm_fuer_...ing_wheels.htm
  4. What wheels and what sizes are these (I absolutely love the one in the first photo!)?

  5. Is a group buy possible?
  6. FVD also sells smaller, thicker wheels. http://www.fvd-web.com/phpkatalog/bo...&grl2=5&grl3=0

    Here are a few samples:

My favorite is unquestionably the first TechArt photo. I would appreciate any information pertaining to all of this.

Thanks!!

Hey Ken,
That steering wheel is nice. I believe it is the same one that Jack had on his TT? As for a place to get it, one Techart dealer that I know of is CEC. I believe that they have more than one location, but the one I know about is in West LA. Albert Cook is one of the sales reps there. Phone 310-203-3900 a.cook@cecwheels.com Company website: http://www.cecwheels.com

Another out in LA might be BY Design 310-559-9670 http://www.bydesignautomotive.com

One more out in LA is Meridian Automotive Design. I might be wrong, but I think this company was started by Matt Mesler formerly of By Design. Maybe someone could confirm this. Anyway the phone numbers are toll free: 888-245-2900 direct: 310-475-2788 website: www.meridianonline.us

Hope that helps!

Porsche Thick wheel

I have the optional Porsche thicker wheel and I really like it a lot. You should look into it first I think.

You sure have a lot of questions this morning, did you get your Wheaties?

Some might tell you that the smaller wheel blocks the instrument cluster. The smaller wheel is more difficult to "turn".

The second picture is the Techart worked OEM wheel (I have that). It is a little thicker than stock, but not that much.

The first wheel appears to be the 320mm wheel and it also appears thicker than the second photo.

I think many of the board sponsors could hook you up; AkkuratPGI, ByDesign, PeterLee, FA, Meridian to mention the few I know of (sorry if I missed someone).

A group buy might be interesting for that smaller wheel.

The first wheel is really nice, seems to be really thick, uses its own airbag, the second wheel seems to use factory airbag, might not be as small in diameter as the first.

Arnie, I think Ken is trying to achieve a smaller diameter wheel as well and the factory thicker wheel wont do that for him, it will only have a slightly thicker grip.

I think Doug and Bob did a great job covering the sources and possible cons of the smaller diameter wheel. The one plus of the smaller wheel might be increased leg/steering wheel clearance, but with the lower sitting GT3 seats, I doubt that's an issue for you. I've had a TechArt wheel (stock Porsche wheel modified by them) on several of my 993/996 based cars and have enjoyed them. BTW, the TA steering wheel is slightly thicker than the factory thick wheel option.

Am I correct with my understanding?
I can either:
  1. Send my wheel out to be redone as Jack did.
  2. Purchase a TA wheel outright as in the first picture in this thread.

The TA reworked OEM wheel is normally an "exchange" (after the new wheel arrives). Black wheels are most likely in a CEC USA warehouse. (My GG took months to be sent from Germany.)

The TA wheel would seem to be an outright purchase, no exchange.

Regarding wheel diameter, just FYI - you might need to keep the original/OEM wheel. I recall that some states (I think Maryland, where I'm from, is one) require that a used car be sold with a steering wheel that is the same diameter as the original. Check your local laws. Now whether anyone really checks into this, unless the size is obviously different, is another matter.

I assume this is an easy mod, what tools are needed for the job?

Who has the best prices on these?
