Boost in a Gt2
Boost in a Gt2
Coming from a Gt3 and never having owned a turbo before, I've got several questions.
1. When does the full boost come on? When I look down at the bar gauge it starts to show .3 at about 3000 then rises to about .8 to .9 at 5500 or so and then she will show a 1.0 right at peak. Mind you I'm trying to drive, look at the rpm, and boost gauge at the same time. So don't take this as gospel, I'm trying to do a seat of my pants observation.
2. Should you shift slightly short of redline, say 6200 to 6500 rpm, since boost starts to tail off at that point?
3. I notice that the boost isn't as high in 1st and 2nd gear, even though I run it to 6000 rpm, usually about 6 or 7 on the bar gauge, but 3rd into 4th and on, holy ****, hang on, it feels like a freight train. Is this normal? Is this what everyone refers to as turbo lag?
4. The steering felt a little loose. The steering wheel felt like there was a little play in it. Northing extreme, just different. Is that normal? Not used to that, my 3's steering wheel travel was non-existant. No play whatsoever. Very tight. Maybe she needs an alignment.
5. Finally just a thought, stock this thing is very fast. She will get sideways in an instant. The pulling power smokes my 3. My wife calls it a Porsche Hot Rod. With all that torque that's what she feels like. Handling and ride feels very similar to my 3, except for the previously mentioned steering wheel play. In fact, I felt the ride may have been a little stiffer, since she rides lower than the 3. She is an unbelievable machine.

my friend... hybrid those k24s u got and u have a 600 HP rocket... imagine pulling 1.3 bars all the way on custom k24s...
most tuners here online can offer u awesome results... do ur research ask questions and ull get where u need to. enjoy.

Everything you have observed is normal on the stock GT2.
0.8 bar is normal for stock. Lower boost see on lower gears to limit wheel spin. Getting stage 3/4 with wastgate will raise the boost to 1.2 and hold it thru the RPMs and gears. Stock suspension all GT2 will need alignments to competitive specs to get it tight.

Well, first gear will not produce maxboost/power because it is so damm short. Even in my car, it will say 1.1, but that's because the gear is useless, it's not a true reding until like you mentioned, you hit 3rd and 4th gear, where its longer and the turbo's are fully spooled.
I suggest you do the ecu, diverter valves and evo v flow, you will minimize turbo lag by ALOT, and you might be even much happier with it then now, hard to believe but true

1. I think the boost numbers you describe are normal. My car hits full boost at around 3800 and k-24's are known to hit full boost a little later.
2. It does seem best to shift slightly below redline for maximum acceleration.
3. see next post (you had two 3.'s)
3. I think what you are feeling is normal to 911's. The rear weight bias make the steering a little less responsive than a 50/50 car like the M3. I had the same experience coming from an M3.
4. Cant really comment about a gt2 but my turobo with ROW suspension feels pretty soft.
Hope that helps, Im sure some gt2 gurus will chime in

9 Eleven,
1. Your boost readings are consistent with what my 2003 did stock. aroun .8 or .9 bar depending of gear - never looked at first though, cause it so short.
2. I think you are correct on shift point for the street. No need to run to redline as you have so much torque in the next gear. So shortshifting at 6,000 to 6,200 should be fine. However if at the track you would only shift if you couldn't make it to the next turn in the existing gear (shift takes longer than the reduced pull to redline).
3. You do get a boost, and prior to 3,500 there is clearly some lag. Make sure you are pointed straight when that boost kicks in!
3. My steering is very tight, just like your GT3 was, so that is likely due to alignment.
4. 2002 Geometry was not as optimized as your 2005 GT3, so a good alignment is key. Shocks on 2002 GT2 are also stiffer. The first mod I would make would be get Moton Clubsport shocks. That really changes the car. Do that before "any" motor mods (ecu, exhaust, etc...). Then when you add more power, you will have the handling already dialed in.
Enjoy!
