VR Project 996TT Stage 2 Update

Stage 1 was a big success for the Vivid Racing Project 996TT. We were very pleased with the reflash, intake, and diverter valves. With any turbo charged car, getting air in and then out is the most important thing. Most OEM’s design the factory exhaust systems to comply with emission and noise regulations. They create the systems to give you just that power you need, but are still very heavy and restrictive. With good numbers already on the dyno, we wanted to reduce some rear end weight and free up the exhaust system. There are many exhausts on the market and Vivid Racing carries many different brands. From B&B to full titanium $15,000 Kreisiegg exhausts, we have an exhaust to appeal to each type of customer. But when it comes to the best bang for the buck, Fabspeed is a great choice for Vivid Racing. The Fabspeed Maxflow Sport exhaust gives you a very high quality made muffler with 100 cell sport catalytic converters. The exhaust fits in the stock location without any modification. As well, the exhaust system has a great tone. No droning in the cabin and has a very sporty sound. Fabspeed also offers a louder race version of this muffler that is less restrictive and provides a much louder tone.

In conjunction with out exhaust install, we choose to add the Fabspeed headers. As you can see by the pictures, the fully polished headers have amazing welds and a collector for maximum performance and better exhaust gas flow. The factory Porsche headers are already designed quite well, but the new Fabspeed headers improve a little of the HP and Torque as well as help the turbos spool up faster. Fabspeed also has optional Quad tips available or you can reuse your stock tips. We have some Quad Tips coming, so stay tuned for those!

The exhaust install with headers was about 2 hours long. To help getting all the hardware off, we sprayed down the bolts with some magic cleaner we have so they would not break off and get stuck. It helps to have 2 people if you are doing this yourself. It is a simple job until you have to remove the actual exhaust. Do the headers first! Make sure to put anti seize on your bolts when you reinstall them. Once the new exhaust was in place and bolted down, we threw the car back on to the dyno. Before the exhaust we were at 421 ft/lbs of torque and 423 wheel horsepower. With the exhaust we ended up at 458 ft/lbs and 430 whp. This was a HUGE gain in torque for us. When looking at the PEAK numbers, the exhaust system made 20 peak horsepower and torque throughout the power curve.

This final Stage 2 process was a great gain from our stock baseline. We gain about 120 ft/lbs of torque and over 107 wheel horsepower with our current mods. The exhaust system retails for around $3300 and the headers at $1400 (optional). Our stage 2 shows another great package with good results for the Porsche 996TT. Stay tuned for the next upgrade!

So stage 2 is exhaust+headers, with no programming change?
If you could possibly dyno stage 1.5a (exhaust alone) and
1.5b (headers alone), it would be very interesting to know if
stock headers are as good as they say for tunes at this level.
thanks,

Joe (a happy Upsolute customer)

Joe,

We decided not to test them seperately from our past experience with turbo headers on cars. Generally you are looking a small gain, faster turbo spool.

I would suggest you are right about the stock headers being good. I think headers are a good upgrade, but not necessary.

Looks good.

Are you heading out to the strip at all for some base line testing at this stage?

Thanks much. Can you tell me what Upsolute offers if you were
to make a change that needed programming adjustments, such
as a VividRacing Stage 3 that added something like Kevin's k16/k24
hybrids?
