Aftermarket Nav
Aftermarket Nav
I have a 2001 TT with Nav and Hi-Fi. I am getting a
Reus system installed and want to swap out the factory unit for something with a seperate head unit as the guys @ Reus say the combo unit I have isn't the best thing. They use a Pioneer Nav unit with touch screen and voice recognition. Anyone have this unit or something else. Any feedback is appreciated. I don't think the factory unit is that good the Nav in my BMW is much better and is a CD based unit. I don't know if the extra cost is worth it to get a new nav setup, anyone have the Reus system with the factory headunit???????????

i have the pioneer before... but the unit i had wasn't touch screen. the look is good though.
later I change to something more non-stock looking, which is the pioneer flip-up...
it's more non-stock look... I think the touch screen that Rich recommended is nice...
for the hi-fi unit, I guess Rick recommended the Eclipse Unit...
That unit is certainly nice, at least better sounding than my pioneer unit... ^___^ i'll say go ahead and do it...
the nav sound can still come out from ur stereo system, and xm and other things can still be installed...
the only cons u may have is the different brand name on ur console... ^_^
I don't see why not...
regarding to the pioneer nav... i have it now... and it works excellent...^_^

Why not get the new Eclipse AV 8533 and add the Eclipse Commander unit so you can add GPS capability?
The 8533 is a touch screen unit with DTS, Dolby 5.1, DVD player and most importantly, with 8V Pre-Amp outputs!!!
Ask the guy at Reus about it, it's a brand new model.

I was going to Steves Stereo but I decided to help the board and a charity with the Reus auction. I'm looking for some input on the nav units not my buying habits........................

i like the fix screen better...
the reason why i changed mine to flip up ones is b/c i wanted gt3 console delete kit...
and i might be putting gauges in the lower console...
if not, i'd stay with fix screen... of course with touch screen...

Alpine
The Mrs. has an Alpine unit in her C4S. It is of course an after-market installation. It has a fixed screen and a remote hand-held unit.
It is quick and very effecient to use. It is certainly faster than the system that was in her old BMW 740i and that in our current FX35. The remote is a handy (pardon the pun) device as you can easily manuever through the menu's with it, and it seems quicker than touch screen or button input.
The things I don't like are that it makes more squeaks, beeps, and bleeps than the censor in a George Carlin telecast; very annoying. Also the fixed screen is mounted in the lower console which means you have to look rather far down to see it. Your eyes really do come off the road. The higher mounting is much easier to see without leaving the road view ahead.
As far as which "head" unit you use good luck to you. I had an Eclipse unit in my old 993 C2 and it used to make the stereo geeks go all weak at the knee's and watery eyed. Perhaps I have a wooden stapes (look it up) and am incapable of true audiophile discernment, I couldn't tell much difference from other high-end units. I think the best advice is to use the stereo shops recommendations as they have reasons (including extra discount by the way in some cases) for using what they do. Just don't let their bombast carry you so far into your resources that it affects your discretionary income!
I'd almost consider putting a GPS in my Turbo if I got lost more often. And then again when I am lost I care less about it in that car!
