In this video it is less audible, but still there.

Sorry for the low quality videos...
Wow, nice Utube audio/video. Just bought my 2002 996tt in LA, with 10k miles on it, stock other than a chip flash, and heard that type of noise after driving it home to the Bay Area. Not sure it is quite as loud as in your video, will have to check that out.

I've been several times to my Porsche mechanic asking about the noise, and he always said "don't worry, they all sound like this. Your car is in very good shape and runs great, forget the noise.."

I found a good post on rennlist that talked about crank thrust bearing failure and they mention the intermediate thrust bearing problem too. New reman motor doesn't have the rattle, so maybe they fixed the problem...

I would think that if you tear down most motors you would find some bearing wear that looks premature.

If you are concerned about the thrust bearings, do an oil analysis.

But since this post says this is a design flaw in the 996tt motors, we don't have too many options here... And there are several high mile, original motor cars out there. I wouldn't sweat it, you'll just drive yourself crazy.
