An observation - engine noise at idle

Last night I was out at a local steak house and happened to notice a 996 being driven by the valet parking guy. He left it idling and as I walked past at first I thought it was a regular 996 NA because the engine was so quiet - ie it didn't have the usually timing chain chatter at idle.

Only later when I had a close look did I realise it as a 996 TT - a least going by the style of the body.

This left me puzzled as I thought all TT's had the timing chain chatter at idle - mine sounds like a bag of nails till about 1500rpm or so.

So I'm wondering if this was a real TT I heard / saw and if so why was it so quiet ??

My X50 has a chattery chain noise too. Some seem to have it and some don't.

My car rattles too. Doesn't sound very mean at idle - it sounds like a bucket. Of course the dealer said it was normal.

What you experienced is rare. Every TT I've ever seen had the bucket of bolts noise. Everyone here (and my technician) has said that it is normal for these engines.

I have a buddy here at work whose 2001 car does not sound like a bucket of bolts, but most I've heard chatter.

Yep! It's been discussed at length on this forum.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the early TTs suffered from some sort of intermediate shaft problem which also caused a racket. Is this true?

You guys hit the nail on the head, some have the noise and some don't. From my experience the ones that do are a little bit faster. When I questioned my guys from PCNA about the noise, the official, unofficial response is "It's the sound of performance"

Rattle...

Yeah I know this engine noise at idle has been discussed many times and I had assumed that all TT's make the noise which is why I was intrigued when I can across such a quiet sweet sounding engine. BTW I'd never let a valet park any of my cars - I'm way too ****.

Mine certainly has a chatter - almost sounds like a light weight flywheel, which it isn't - mines stock.

Also my TT has a new 'crate engine' in it after the original was replaced at about 7500 miles (went in for its 1st 12 month service and came out with a new engine due to an oil leak I didn't even know was there!).

So I guess mine is 'normal' and the ones which chatter are abnormal.

I like it described as 'the sound of performance' !

It'd be interesting to compare notes on engines which chatter and those that don't after say 75,000 miles to determine if there's any longer term factors coming into play.

I had the same noise and I have heard it on many other 996 Turbos as well, now I know what it is, chain stretcher. When you start the car you dont hear it because the oil pressure is high and when it becomes warm the oil pressure drops and then you hear it. Change both (1k) and the engine will be quiet again...

best

There have been numerous threads on the topic. Bottom line is all Turbo's do it to some degree. Here's a link to a thread re. this subject that clarifies things.
