I get my short shifter installed on friday. I bought the porsche one, because they will warranty it.
I am also sick of the long throws.

I have the B&M under car one bought from Brandywine last Nov. Works great- throws are 35% shorter front/back , no slop. Best thing about it for MY preferences : NO notchiness , same throw weight ( i.e., smooth as stock ) and the gate to gate distance is stock so less chance of going from 5th to 2nd at speed.
Some prefer the in- car short shifter for more of a " boy racer " notchy feel , but to me it doesn't match the overboosted smoothness of the clutch on a Turbo.
On a GT3 with it's heavy clutch , a " notchy" shifter might be OK. Driver controls on an expensive ,properly designed car should have a uniform feel throughout IMO - all soft ,all moderate or all firm .
The other nice thing about the undercar unit is that it takes 15 minutes to install or remove , so if a tranny issue comes up , it's off the car in a flash so that the dealer doesn't blame it. Kinda a hastle to keep exchanging the in car shifter.

I was at my dealer today and I was checking out the shifter in this boxster s anniversary edition. The car had the Porsche short throw shifter installed and it felt very racey and notchy, very short throws, I liked it but like you said Im not sure if that kinda shifter belongs in a 996tt.
So let me get this straight, the in-car short shifter is notchy and racey and the under car is more like stock but with reduced throws, correct?

I installed my in car B&M last night and it ROCKS. I don't know if notchy is the right word, at least not the way a lot of people are using it. Yes it's notchy if you want to call it that, but it is perfect if you ask me. Nice and short, and you always know what gear you're in. It's a whole different driving experience. Yes it takes a little more effort to change gears, but who cares...you get used to it in about 10 minutes. Overall the "Feel" is literally 10000 times better than stock. If the under car version retains the feather light smoothness of the stock setup I wouldn't want that at all. That belongs on a school bus or something, not a sports car.
I also was concerned with the reports of notchyness and increased effort but am very happy with the results since installing the in car B&M Friday night. The shifter is now much more precise feeling. There is a much more defined click into and out of gear. No more do I feel like I'm reaching for 3rd and 5th. Just remember you can't rush the shifts, wait for the synchros. It's a short shift not a quick shift.
