Porsche says I have a problem with my intermediate shaft?

I took my car in last Tuesday April 17th 2007 for a noise. Neer the bottom crank pulley. The sound was not there until the car warmed up. The sound was a clunk metalic sound. I have some video and will post it. Anyhow at first they thought it might be a broken chain tensioner. No dice! So they pulled the motor. After looking it over they told me, exact words "We see no noticeable reason for the sound." They told me Porsche North America had
been called. That was Tuesday April 24th 2007. Today I call down and they tell me that Porsche says they think it is the intermediate shaft. Something about rivets coming loose. My understanding is this is some kind of manufacturing defect and not self inflicted. The dealer tells me it is $8500 plus gaskets to fix it. I would guess gaskets are another $2k at least? So now I am in for $10500. This sucks! My main concern though is it is fixed right! I am nervous this could balloon in to a nightmare. Thoughts?

Well as promised here is the link to the video on utube!

if it's a manufacturing defect, then why aren't they covering it?

I would def be concerned anytime anyone says "we think" and trys to charge you 10K to fix it, esp if it is concerning your shaft.

In all seriousness, good luck ...

This should be covered - it's a known problem which has been talked about many times. There's some good info on Rennlist about this.

Good luck.

Car is not under any kind of warranty though. Have you heard of Porsche North America helping with the bill at all?

Not sure, but I am positive that I would love for the hottie at the front desk of the local Porsche dealership to help me out with my "intermediate shaft."

Sorry, couldn't resist.

prety much all 996tt's have this noise to some extent.
It's around 1000 rpm and goes away at 1200. I don't think there is a fix for it.

At my age, no...although I have been finding that my turbos have been running out of steam at high RPM's. However, a small blue shot of "race fuel" has rectified the problem.

No I am sure most 996TT's don't sound like this. It is very loud. Sounds like something smacking hard in the block. Not a faint sound or even oh yeah it's there. More like dude is your car going to make it out of the driveway
