CF on dash delaminating...anyone else have this problem?

My friend recently bought a 2001 996TT and the carbon fiber trim along the top of his dash began delaminating and warping at the sides.

I'm going to assume it happened because of sunlight heating it up and weakening the glue. Is this something common or no? He took it to the shop that he bought the extended warranty from and they removed the entire piece of trim. The guy said he'd order a replacement, however, he said it "may not match 100%."

I don't have a picture of the trim peeling up, but here's a picture of the car itself:

Amazing car

I have seen delamination of CF trim and of wood trim from the plastic backing. It's not pretty when it happens. It wouldn't happen with a trim made completely out of CF, but that would be really expensive compared to CF lamination on plastic trim.

If the source of the CF if the same, the match should be close, but nobody can guarantee 100% match (from what limited understanding I have). I think it's great that the extended warranty will cover it. Most policies exclude all cosmetics.

With the trim, it's hard to win in the long run. CF looks great, but can fade from the sun and crack and peel. Aluminum look can get scratched. Wood (which seems to be unpopular on this board) can crack and delaminate. Leather can dry and shrink. Plastic is more durable, but has no bling.

My side vent started to delaminate on the top part so I took it off used a little crazy glue and a clamp and let it set over nite and it seems to be holding so far (one week)

Makes sense. It's a really strange place to put trim too both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. You can't really see the CF trim along there and the sun beats down on it.

Oh well

I have a full CF package with the dash piece and yes for sure that is common...you have to have a sunscreen in when you leave the car outside.
If he just wants to replace that dash/defroster surround and he has a normal color leather, its only about $500 and you can get replacement pieces - Hit up MA Carbon, John can take care of him.
Or if he is like my situation with porsche exclusive having to do everything (based on leather color, stitching, etc.) then he may need to consider another route.
MACarbon is doing those dash pieces in full CF for mine so that it looks all nice and clean and OEM.
Careful with anyone trying to one-off pieces that "may not match 100%". I had a guy do that and it didnt work out. Go with something that you know will look perfect.

-also that trim is there for the gawkers that look in the window ;-)

- That piece along the dash is not CF on plastic. its just a thin CF strip of material with a heavy coat of that plastic type sealer on it. when i got my car both ends were bowed up. i took it off altogether cause it looked like ***. No plastic involved, just CF and clearcoat.

I have the CF interior and mine looks good as new (knocking on wood).

I have looked at some of the peices at www.macarbon.com and they look very nice and reasonably prices for good CF pieces.

Mine was a one owner SoCal car and the previous owner clearly left it in the sun a bunch - hence the delaminating, but yeah John's stuff at MACarbon looks really solid. I'll post pics when everything is in. The CF work is actually done in Belgium and should be as good if not better than factory.

If anyone is having problems with the CF steering wheel, i think i found a guy for that too.

My carbon fiber center console is starting to delaminate around the ashtray. I'd hate to pay $1500 for a new console. Do you think epoxy will bond to these pieces and hold them together? Is there a better way to repair it?

I was planning to wait until it warms up and hopefully becomes more pliable but am I wasting my time?

I have used epoxy on delaminating trim, and it's holding well for over a year and a half. Just make sure to clean up any excess with a wet cloth before it hardens. You could use a hot air gun or hair dryer if it's really cold, to warm up the trim first.

When my car was under warranty porsche replaced them, but 2years later r/s starting to have same problem, not under warrany now so I jb weld to fix the problem. If they would of made them wider, that mostly likely wouldn't have the problem, I may just remove them and return to stock, I have the complete carbon package on my car and that been the only thing that I think porsche really screwed up on. For the large amount they charged, it been the only thing that I'm really unhappy with!

-very common especially after a few years on the road. i would assume that the more sun exposure = more delaminating. macarbon pieces are great quality pieces. look just like oem since matching to other parts is very important.
i had ac vents replaced under warranty. had CPO warranty deny center console U a year later since trim pieces arent covered...(according to them...)
