I think my Clutch is dead! =( Advice Please!

Well, just over 18,000 miles on my car and I think my clutch is dead already. What a bummer...of all the cars I've owned before, I've never had a clutch go out this fast. Mind you, I haven't tracked any of my previous cars either. I've never smelled burning clutch from my TT even after spirited drives or track sessions so I don't think I was really abusing it.

Anyway, all that aside, the clutch appears to be done. Punch it in 5th at 80 MPH and the RPM's shoot up quick.

So I got 3 Questions I was hoping you guys could help me with:

1. Which clutch should I get for a Stage 1? (I plan to keep it Stage 1 because I plan to sell the car in about 1.5 years and don't want anything too crazy that will hurt the cars resale value (i.e. Rattly LWFW, He-Man Clutch etc.))

2. Is changing the Spark Plugs a breeze if changing them at the same time as the clutch?

3. What is the average cost to get the clutch changed at the dealer?

Thanks,
KJ

jrgatfh has a spectacular aura aboutjrgatfh has a spectacular aura about
1) Not sure about, what clutch might be good for a stage one car I just put a new clutch in my car and I hate it.

2) If you drop the whole motor when you do the clutch job then putting in spark plugs is a breeze from what I understand. If you dont drop the motor to do the clutch then the plugs can be a PITA (again this is from what I understand let one of the more experienced members guide you through this). You have to remove the rear bumper which is pretty easy then loosen the IC's and swing them out of the way ad remove a Heat shield. Some of the plugs are easy to get to and some of them are hard, there is one specific one that is a real ***** to get to.

3) Most dealers probably drop the motor to do the clutch instead of keeping it in the car and working around it so I'm guessing the labor will be anywhere from $1700-$2100.

Please once again let another member verify the info I just gave you as I do not want to stir you in the wrong direction.

If I had to do it again, I'd have gotten the GT3 RS clutch kit from Kevin @ UMW. All OEM parts, and he has good prices.

Is the GT3 RS Clutch a straight swap for the TT, or does it require other parts besides the Pressure Plate, Bearing and Clutch Disc?

Thanks,
KJ

The kit has it all and is a direct replacement...a good choice BTW.

Is this what you guys are talking about?

http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/me...y_Code=996main

It looks like it includes everything EXCEPT the pressure plate. Pressure plate would be another $400 something (I'm told it's the same pressure plate as stock...is that correct?)

What do you guys DO to these things? 53,000 miles and counting on my original.

Labor for the whole job (including flywheel) shouldn't exceed 10 hours, or about $1,000.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just stressed out about this whole clutch thing (just when the weather is getting nice too) and I want to get it sorted out as fast as possible (and in the best way possible).

Does the GT3-RS Clutch/Lightweight Flywheel Chatter much?

Thanks,
KJ

17-2100 is fairly high for the labour. I would expect around the $1000 benchmark.

I think I paid for 20 hours of labor, but that was including the flywheel (engine drop is 18 hours by the book). If you just do the clutch, it can be done very quickly if you can find a shop that will do it with the engine still in. PorschePhd has posted detailed instructions on how to do this. Search my username if you want to find more on clutch/FW labor pricing.

Does the GT2 Clutch Kit work too in case I don't want to change the flywheel?

Thanks,
KJ

my clutch failed at 25,000 miles. It cost about $1700 to replace. They dropped the motor to do it, but I read on this forum that that was not necessary.
