Stock Exhaust: What is so bad about it?

Hi.

I have been asking a lot of people about exhausts here, and I thank all of them. My wife asked me a simple question: if an exhaust is so easy to improve that so many different vendors can and do sell them (Gembella, Maxspeed, Ztech, Fabspeed, Ruf (modded OEM), TechArt, evoms, Europipe, PSI, Billy Boat, etc.), why didn't Porsche do it?
What is Porsche achieving with the stock unit. Is it cost savings? Is it purely noise...they know their market and if noise sells, why not sell? Laws? HP? Torque LOW in the rev range?...Most driving is under 4500 rpm (she is right....really, for us non-track drivers at least...).

Could anyone give me a technical explanation of why the heck Porsche, on the top line car group (the X50 and GT2 reportedly have the same exhaust despite rumors to the contrary) a "bad" stock exhaust.

Is it more reliable than the aftermarker (ok, a Europipe will probably out last any of us in years ....never seen work like that in my life....almost seems to be a crime to put stuff like that on a car in a place you cannot see....amazing work, others are nice too)?

I am looking for some positives on the stock exhaust, as given the pricing, it is unlikely I am moving off stock soon......unless someone has one for about 500 shipped of course. ;-)

TIA and happy fathers day to the dads out there.

PS: If anyone has pictures of the insides of the stock exhaust (they were here but no longer seem to come up in the links), please post. Also, can one add 100 cats or even 200 cats to the stock units to get less obstruction without drone. The key for me and many is the drone. I have kids and drone makes them not want to be in the car (old 993 with a BB system drove them away from Porsches...I had to work to get them in the turbo the first time, really).

Your wife clearly doesn't understand, and you are obviously struggling with, the value of modding. If you have the Porsche stock exhaust, then when someone asks you what exhaust you have, you would have to answer "Oh, I have the factory exhaust." Over time this will turn into "Oh, I still have the factory exhaust for now," then "Oh, my new exhaust is on order," and finally "I have the Billabong Pro 1000 because I was willing to sacrifice a little bottom end torque for a higher RPM peak on my horsepower, and besides, my Zenaflow XR chip was hand tuned by Hans to provide more mid-range, and the ceramic coated seals allow for a more efficient thermal transfer of heat, which should help me launch better."

"Cool, do you wanna go for a drive?" "Oh, I can't, thanks, my car is throwing CELs right now, but I'm trying to get both manufacturers on the phone together to decide who's fault it is and work out a solution . . . "

Just give this to your wife. I'm sure she'll understand.

(By the way, for the record, I have never even seen a CEL light, no tuners were harmed in the making of this response, Billabong and Zenaflow are imaginary manufacturers not based on actual characters, and always go with board sponsors and everything will come up Aces in your world, both in your car and beyond . . .)

Ha ha ha.....awesome reply MexicoBlue. I am really laughing inside my soul on that one.

I am struggling....so if anyone has a dust collector modded stock (beside a certain person who posted that it hurt his brain......).....so not bad drone......I am all ears.

No pun intended there.

She'll kill me if I spend 5k on tubes of stainless steel.....and in the end, she is probably not completely wrong.

The stock exhaust is not bad it is too quiet for most of us and if you start to mod your car it is a restriction.

I think the stock exhaust compromises performance to keep sound levels extremely low to please the general public more than the enthusiast. The average person thinks the car is fast enough when they first drive it, I thought mine was fast at first, too. Now it seems slow and I think I need more. Performance is secondary to noise and harshness for most people, though.

I like the 1" drilled hole solution. He says the noise is "much better" in a PM, but does anyone think/know anything about how such might hit performance.

I contacted Stephen at IA about the QTP system that they installed a few years ago shown in a picture on the QTP site. It seemed perfect. 400 or so for the system, a few hundred or so to install.... He said it sounded great, but on the dyno it lost power. That is my fear with the "hole" trick. ......

Do you lose power/torque with the whole thing off the car? Parts? On the race cats/muff bypasses...what happens to the low end of the rev range?

TIA

(in pain....if the EP was 1000 this would not be an issue....if anyone out there has stuff lying in a heap and wants a sure way to make a complete stranger happy.... ;-) )

PS: In all of this, the community has been amazing. Great bunch here and on rennlist.com. Thanks. JB

Look in the for sale section sometimes you can get a lightly used exhaust reasonably.

Fabspeed brand new is not 5000.00.

Thanks...doing this, one tidbit....

I contacted Robin of rsr 993 muffler mod fame and he is interested in the 996TT arena...he just needs the image/diagram of how the stock mufflers are laid out. I found such a thread here, but the images were not longer coming up (link died). Anyone have such links.

Also, in talking to those here and at IA (SK, thanks), it is a royal pain in the rear to take out the internal cats on the stock units. My hope is that given the internal "map" of the stock units and with his 993 turbo experience, Robin will be able to get an RSR996TT muffler option out there.

I have NOTHING to do with Robin financially. I know of him because of his reputation in the 993 world. If anyone here has pictured of the inside of a 996TT muffler (opened up fully would be best....), PLEASE post them to this thread. I'll make sure he gets a link here and such.

I wish there was a way to get a great fab place like ep to make an EP light system. Say I source cats, and say I would be happy with 200's not 100's....not the best, but a lot better shall we say, wish there was a way to get a cheaper/lesser version. Fewer bends/welds, less finish work, etc. Just think...EuroPipe for 1200 new.....we'd all buy them, even if 5% less than the best option. Heck, Stef would have to hire a bunch of people.....

I am tempted by the maxspeed system....Nello is convinced it is the real deal and has it on his car...1999 for headers, tips, and cats/muffler. Seems too good to be true almost. That is really tempting me....but I am just sitting for now saving. In the end, if I do it it has to be a good one with no CEL's....no issues..... But Nello has such a good price and it seems to look just like a fabspeed to me.

Anyway, if anyone has that picture, please post! Above are all of my thought out in the open. If I go FS, I will buy from Stephen because he has been so giving of time. If I go EP, I will go via Kevin at UMW if the prices come down a lot.....not Kevin, the Euro is the issue. If anyone get Nello's units and says they are really great after a few 1000mi's.....maybe that is the right way. That might be my "cheap" ep. Drone is not ok.

Porsche designs a car to meet certain general needs and designs something that will suit everyone.

A restrictive exhaust was probably put on for two reasons: to meet fuel efficienty benchmarks, and because this is a daily driver sports car, not a weekend car so everday drivability was what was aimed for.

Also turbo owners tend to be more conservative and dont' want as much attention as customers who go for italian cars. Thats just my guess

i hv to agree that on the gt2 and gt3 series, a louder exhaust is a must since most don't daily drive it. on a more popular and general car like C2, the stock sounds fine for most. not on the GT series though...

for the most part, stock does work well with the rest of the car performance wise. if u mod engine or other intake / exhaust components, you'll get some gains. if ur stock, the stock mufflers works just fine performance wise.
