Oil Consumption-Normal?

I am looking at purchasing an '04 TT with the X50 package and was told that it uses about a quart of oil every 1,000-1,200 miles. Is this considered normal? It is from a dealer. Is there anything that I can ask them to check before I complete the deal?

Thanks

Does a PPI check for type II over-revs? If it does you should be good.

NO WAY is that normal. Are you telling me that between 15,000 mile oil changes adding 15 qts of oil is OK?

I do oil changes every 7,500 miles and I add 1-2 qts in between.

I appreciate all of the quick responses. Also did some searching at the Rennlist site and got the same responses. 1K to 1.5K per quart can be normal, but some get more and some get less. I pretty comfortable with the dealership and saleman and I purchased my last CPO car with them and they represented the car as it was.

Thanks again.....Hopefully, in about 2-3 weeks, I'll have a new toy..WOO HOO!!!!

1 qt every 1k miles is WITHIN porsche Spec...but it certainly AINT normal. Its normal for a car that MAY be leaking from somewhere.

Its normal for an engine LOSING that much oil to OUTLAST its CPO.

Its normal consumption/leakage as long as you dont mod your car.

Once you flash your ecu and run more boost...whatever leak yuou may have will get bigger.

I'm with Emeka, that car is a sludgefest ready to happen. Remember, these are high dollar engines.

Is there an easy/simple way to check the engine to see where it is leaking from? I did speak to the prior owner of the car and he was the one who volunteered the information. This is not his first turbo and said that his previous ones all used about this much. Since this is with Porsche spec's, I doubt that they will be inclined to do much about it. Suggestions?

Oil consumption...

I've kept detailed records of my '03 TT oil consumption from new and it's consistently used 1 quart per 1200 miles. It's now just 4 years old and covered 24,500 miles.
No oil leaks or anything and by all accounts getting between 1000 and 1500 miles per quart of oil is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about.

It normal!

Same here as the other guys...about 1qt per 1500. On my PPI by a guru at EPE in Boston...dry engine, perfect hardware. Same by the guru here near Hershey PA.

Makes me wonder about the oil change interval....do those using 1qt every 1000 miles get MORE protection for their engines than those with no leaks at all. That is my unsolved mystery...

I always use Mobil 1 0w-40, factory fill and per the recent PCA magazine on it, a good choice to use. I do not want to open up the oil wars. That is what I use. I don't want those using brand R or brand C to rant on how silly I am. I have used R and C and others...... I can get Mobil 1 at Walmart and Autozone cheap.

my car goes on alot of oil but it is tracked and I am on the turbos CONSTANTLY...this makes a HUGE difference in your consumption...
I would say I go through 1quart per 1k miles FOR SURE on the track...and my car is definitely not leaking anywhere...has been checked MANY times...

I would say your fine...
