NelsonF,

Did you ever race a silver 993 Turbo in your neighborhood within the past month or so? I ask because a modded 996TT raced me in your area (louder exhaust and lowered). My car is a Ruf Turbo R.

Was it polar silver? Yeah, it was me! We gotta do it again! Do you know of any GT2's in the area?

That was me. Would it be OK to say that a 993 Ruf Turbo R is a bit faster than a Stage4GT?

Unfortunately, my GT2 friends live in the LA area.

R&T measured 0-60 in 3.3 and 0-100 in 8.0 second. Speed at the end of the quarter is about 128 MPH. Top speed around 210. I measured 0-150 with a soft start at about 15 seconds.

Ruf rates the car at 490 HP @ 5,500 RPM. However, that number doesn't really mean anything because there are too many other factors to consider (i.e., the shape of the HP/TQ curves, how the HP/TQ was measured, gearing, weight, turbo lag, etc).

Bill,

I'd say your car was plenty fast but would like to do a better comparison to establish it as faster. We should get together soon for some fun. I have always been impressed with Ruf and love the thoroughness of their cars. Please pm me when you have time to discuss a meet.

Sounds like fun. I'm having some work done now, so maybe in a week or two.

I guess I'll have to ask my wife to step out for a better comparison. Maybe she should ride with you.

Ha. I love it. Where have you been able to go fast unmolested around here? Are you adding or fixing something? I'm looking for an 87-89 Carrera to get some of that vintage feel missing in the newer cars. I've dyno'd at 560rwhp/580rwtq, lets swap and check impressions. Do you live in RB?

We'll have to travel somewhere to safely compare the cars (we'll keep that a secret). I'm just doing some normal maintenance (plugs, filters, etc). I think you'll find the GT2 with an EP exhaust accelerates about the same as my car. Weight is critical. Put your engine in a 2800 lb car and you'll probably be scared to floor it.

Hey Bill:

Would it be OK to say that a GT2 with EP exhaust is comparable to (perhaps even a bit faster than) a 993 Ruf Turbo R? At least that was my recollection from the infamous "not-so-official" WS front straight away drags at Rob's event.

Jack,

Good to hear from you! That is a true statement. People underestimate how fast the GT2 can be. It's light weight makes a big difference.

BTW, I found out I was leaking boost for a long time through a loose intercooler hose. I didn't know this until I put the check engine light back in (Ruf removed it). The car feels faster now. I don't know how far back this happened, so we'll have to run another test!

I just put the Upsolute chip in my otherwise stock GT2. Against my old 996tt with stage 4 (not GT) we ran neck and neck 40-160mph.

rmrmd1956,

Thanks for the great input. These results are far more meaningful than "my HP is bigger than yours". The fastest turbo cars I've seen have been running very high boost (more than 1.3 bar) or 3.8 liters with significant intake, head, exhaust and cooling work to accommodate the increased air flow. I've only seen Ruf, Andial and Protomotive do this type of work. Reducing rotational mass (e.g., titanium connecting rods and/or lightweight clutch/flywheel) also helps. Finally, making your car lightweight provides a dramatic performance increase. I've seen people take 300 or more pounds off their turbos using composite body panels and removing non-essential items.

Turn off the PSM, get new racing slicks, and run down the nearest GT-2 and pass when he makes a mistake. You see, he won't be used to not being able to shake the car in his rear view. It will come down to the driver, and not the car. Unless the race is long, and then tire management of AWD will exceed the cords showing on the RWD GT-2. Just my track experience. And oh god forbid there is a little water on the track and the GT-2 is toast. Maybe in sunny CA this issue never comes up.
