Removal of corded telephone handset mount?

I'm planning on pulling off the corded handset for my phone that I never use and mounting a FM Ipod adapter in the same place. I see the plastic cover or whatever that seems to be either covering a mounting screw, or actually holding the piece on itself, but can't figure out how to pull it off without tearing it up. I've tried prying the inside piece off several different ways with a couple of screwdrivers, but haven't had any success.

Any suggestions on how to pull that plastic bit off and/or what else I need to do to get access to the back of the handset mount to replace it with something else?

I'd go for the really big screwdriver method if I didn't know it would cost me $50 for a tiny little bit of plastic... Not that I'd ever be able to track down the part to actually order it...

it looks like it mounts similar to the one on the left side. Try this, grab the left side plate at the edge closest to the firewall and pull outward, and pull it away from you. This is how the normal plates are removed.
Now try it on the phone mount, and see if they designed the mounts the same way.

The car came with that stock? Wow, I haven't seen one of those in a vehicle since like, 1994.

Ya, the car came pretty much fully loaded. First owner was the daughter of Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (a.k.a Kuwaiti princess).

I'm Planning on pulling the piece off, then removing the phone, which looks like it mounts from the back side and replacing it with a good FM Ipod cradle and putting it back on.

Spent 2 hours upside down folded up underneath the dash the other night, got my V1 hardwired in, figured out how to pull off the driver side panels for the center pillar (only took a minute), but was shutdown on any progress on the passenger side with that dam phone mount.

The tapered bit towards the headlights pops off kind of like the other side, but the fat end where the phone is mounted is as solid as all get out, and I just can't figure out how to get it off. The plastic cover tab doesn't want to give up how it pops off either, although with the front pried back I can see that there's no bolt/screw directly behind it now.

Anybody have any bright ideas? Might I have to pull the nav system & climate control display or something crazy like that?

what is that square thing on the side of the holder, is it some cover for a screw of some sort?

It may be, I'm not sure. I initally thought so, but if I shove my head all the way under the dash and pry up the narrow end and look under there I can't see any screws or bolts that would be behind it, although I can't see that well and they could easily be obscured. Can't figure out how to pop the middle of the plastic cover off either, it seems to be hinged, but pushing on it or prying on it just ends up scratching the plastic and not opening anything.
