Cool Supercharging my 996

I'm starting this thread as a journal for my S/C install experience.

Forum members on this and other porsche boards seems to be happy with their S/C
installs and with my factory warranty running out this month on my 2000 996
I decided to pull the trigger on the S/C.

Drop my car off Thursday June 10th, 2004 at SCarGo http://www.scargoracing.com for the installation of the EVOMS supercharger kit. So many beautiful porsches in the shop getting various upgrades.
Have to remember to bring my camera to take pictures of the shop and cars
next time.

cjv's car (Killer Angel) was in the back, it's such a technically cool car with all its' gadgets not to mention the crazy HP's
it puts out.

Prior to the install I had a chance to get a couple of dyno runs at two different shops and requested SCarGo to get my vehicle weight before and after the S/C install.
I will also get dyno runs to compare the delta's when I get my car back.

First baseline dyno run was on May 13th at ATP turbo in Fremont, CA. http://www.atpturbo.com
They are relatively inexpensive and charge $65.00 for three pulls.
Their dyno is recessed into the ground and you just drive onto it.
The car was strapped down to huge anchor bolts drilled into
the concrete floor. A blower fan was on the floor at the rear of the car
blowing at an angle up into the trunk lid by the intake snorkel.
The technician ask what RPM I want to take it up to.
I told him take it to 7000 or close to the 7200 rpm limiter.
It was interesting to stand next to car and watch the speedometer go.
The car hit 125MPH in 4th gear at 7000-7200 rpm which correspond exactly
to the Transmission diagram RPM/SPEED graph in the back of the owners manual.
The Porsche folks at Stuttgart really test their cars and provide good data!

Technical Data section, page 215 in my owners manual

Dyno graph below, unfortunately it doesn't have torque numbers because
the technician was not familiar with porsches and could not find
a spark-plug wire to clamp onto for RPM pickup.
I wasn't able to locate a place for the RPM pickup either,
the spark-plug cables seems to be behind a metal cover.
The folks at ATP turbo felt bad about not being able to get the torque numbers
and just charge me $50.00 for the three pulls.

Second baseline dyno run at Dyno Labs in San Ramon, CA. http://www.dynolabs.net

The Golden Gate PCA chapter held a dyno day on May 29th 2004 at Dyno Labs
in San Ramon. The dyno day special was $60 for three pulls. I decided to attend
to see if I can get some torque numbers and to see how close the dyno numbers
would be to my first run at ATP turbo.

Dyno Labs dyno was sitting at ground level which means the car has to be
driven onto a lift first, lifted up and then backing the rear wheels onto
the dyno rollers. I guess this type of setup makes it easier to get
to the bottom of the car and also if you can't excavate into the ground
to install the dyno rollers.
Ray Razon is the owner, very nice guy. He show me how to get the
only accessable spark-plug wire in a narrow opening of the spark-plug cover.
He had two blowers in front of car the pointing at each side radiator.
I asked about a blower in the back but he said he didn't want to trip
the MAF sensor. I just want to point this out because of the difference
in the airflow from my previous dyno run at ATP turbo.

Dyno runs were pretty close between the two shops, about a 8 HP difference.
I felt the difference had more to do with the position of the airflow than
the difference between the dyno's.
First dyno run at ATP turbo, fan blower in the rear of the car aim towards
the snorkel and gulping in lots of air versus second dyno run at Dyno Labs
with two blowers in front of the car aim at the radiators.
The dyno runs confirms what I already know about our cars, they are very
consistent and have such a sweet silky smooth engine.

Angry

Typo in thread name.
Should be Supercharging my 996 instead of Supercharing my 996 but I don't see any way of editing it.

Admins help!!!!

At least I hope I won't superchar it!

Hi Kirby;

You're more than welcome to try the car out once I get it back. Should be ready by this Friday (June 18). The S/C is already installed and just waiting for the ECU to come back from EVOMS.
Dyno runs after the S/C install should be interesting but I rather have a run against my brothers' 996TT

Hi Kirby;

Friday actually works out better for me since I decided to take the day off to play with my new toy

I should know by tomorrow if I'll get my car back on Friday.

Hi Shawn;

I went with the EVO supercharger.
The kit was around $10K plus installation.

J.Seven;

Sure will! Most likey will not happen this weekend as I hinted to Kirby it'll be a very busy weekend for me. Two graduations I need to attend, one of them in UCLA and Father's Day on Sunday.
My brother and I will hook up next weekend as we're taking our cars down to Leguna Seca for a DE event. http://www.coastaldriving.org
