996 N/A mods
996 N/A mods
Hello. I'm new and look forward to reaching 100 posts.. I want to get started with a tuning thread. I've just acquired an 02 996 to go accompany my heavily modded 87 951 track day car and, though it is a wonderful daily driver, it needs some *****. What are the most effective 996 n/a mods in order? From what I've heard, the EVO intake, Fabspeed headers, Revo or GIAC tuning, IPD intake manifold ,etc..
Please chime in swith experiences and recommendations.!

There have been alot of discussions on this topic and I think that most people will agree that there is very little extra to get out of the 996 N/A engine, short of supercharging it. Anyone who promises you significant gains - ask them to put it in writing that if a dyno does not prove the gains, they will refund your money. I don't thnk that you will get many who step up with a guarantee.....
Other than the already offered suggestion of supercharging the car, the best advice that can be offered is to buy a 996TT. I spent a lot of money on my 99 996 chasing horsepower that just wasnt' there...well maybe I got another 35 hp out of it....dont' think you'll get a whole lot with the box full of mods that are for sale....it's exactly as Dave says above....not a lot of room in the 3.4L to gain much HP.

I have done a lot to my NA 996, SC is the way to go if you want more grunt, Plenum, intake, exhaust and software, does improve the audio, and not that much on hp, my *** dyno is happy though!
my 2 cents
I've seen it enough (although not experienced it myself) -you would benefit more from driver education rather than horsepower gains. After improving your driving skills, you will have a better idea what improvements to spend your money on- brakes, exhaust, suspension etc, based on your driving skills.
has anyone seen "Motorsport Ranch" on the Hi-def channels? -a great example of the difference between driver skill vs horsepower

I'm in the process of trading up from the 3.4 to a facelift 3.6. I'm going to do a 'stage 2' tuning pack which includes EVOMS V-flow induction, GIAC remap and miltek exhaust. I've already got the EVOMS SSK and a RSS plenum on order so will fit that at the same time.
The car already has a sport chassis so not lowering any further. Maybe paint protection and ICE upgrade at some point too...
You'll never really see gains of more that 10% but it's fun moding

Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions. I have been talking to some guys that ran Grand Am cup with 996's and they were abe to get 320 whp with stock headers and engines. I'm going to get the details on how they achieved it and will keep anyone who is interested posted. I have daily dyno access to assess the results of what I do. Weight reduction, free air flow and some suspension upgrades are my priorities.
I have 2 track cars, so I'm not looking to turn this into one. I make a 35 mile interstate round trip to work every day with my wife and that's what the car is really for...LOL She'll be OK with these 'tune up' parts about which I'm inquiring, but if it gets too loud or she hears a supercharger, she'll complain and I'll have to buy her something with equal or greater value....Married life is tricky sometimes. ...

I did the Evo air induction, GIAC chip and RSS Plenum and was very pleased with my personal "seat of the pants" dyno...probably got about 10 % hp/tq increase but for the price I am pleased......but if you got the funds do go with the supercharger.....

Porsches are not good tuner cars. They come pretty maxed out when new.
Its kind of a bummer as you add header/exhaust, AEM, larger injectors, etc. to a Jap car and you get impressive gains but not so with the Porsche.
PSS9 Coilovers (nicer performance without sacraficing ride)
Plenum (if you want to spend $1000.00 for 20hp)
Exhaust (for cool tips and sound)
I put a GT2 front end on mine and that helped me with the friendly front end look. I also added soem Kinesis wheels that look better than stock ones IMO.
Thats about it unless you supercharge it. Have fun and just drive!
