Thinking of buying a Carrera
Thinking of buying a Carrera
as a daily driver...
It's a 1999. 51k miles. Just had a service at 50k miles. Battery, brakes, tires all changed supposedly. I'm gonna look up the carfax because this is the 2nd owner. I won't buy if it was leased at any point. He's asking $26k because he wants to sell it quickly.
Now I'm not loaded so reliability is a slight concern. It seems people are split on having no issues and having a lot of problems. I was looking for an E36 M3 with low miles, but people are asking unrealistic prices imo and I can't find one in my area anyway. I would overpay a bit to find a really good one, but there is a line between overpaying to get something good and overpaying just because some idiot thinks his M3 with 100k miles is still worth 16-17k.
I wanted to get a car now and then when I get another car in 3 years or so I can track the car I have currently.

If reliability is an issue, dont buy an inexpensive Porsche. Buy one from the dealer with a CPO warranty up to 100k miles...That way if there are any issues, they will be covered. A small percentage of Porsche 996s suffer from sudden engine failure...no way to tell when and if it will happen, but a new engine is about $10k....
Also the car is serviced every 15k miles...if he just did it, he is 5k miles too late...if its the 45k mile service...I would ask why he waited. That could mean the oil in the car was in there for 20k miles!!! There are usually no dirt cheap sports cars, as the little things that need to be done will raise the price of the car...A CPO car has a good clutch, tires, brakes, all servicing done and a warranty...If you have to buy tires, brakes and a clutch you are into the car another $3-5k...that could EASILY be the difference between a private party car and one at the dealer...Pay them now, or Pay them later...lol...
Just wanted to also add...these cars when taken care of make GREAT daily drivers....I bought my car with 45k miles on it with a CPO warranty, sold it with 145k miles on it 4 years later. I only paid for 2 repairs outside normal servicing. Water pump, and Fuel pump. Under warranty the engine was replaced at 60k miles. The new engine was great and up to the day I sold it ran like the day it was installed. The car itself was in EXCELLENT condition with the only wear being the driver seat..lol...99-01s had more problems with engine failures than 02+. If I were to buy again, it would be with a warranty from a Porsche dealer....
Ideally I'd buy an E36 M3 right now and a Porsche or something else in 3-4 years. The problem is someone rear ended me and totalled my 02 S4 so I need a car really soon. (Accident was a month ago).
GL with whatever you decide to purchase.
newport is correct when he mentioned not buying the 99 as a DD if you are buying for reliability or if you are at all on a budget.
we bought our 99 w/ $30K miles and so far (knock on wood) had to replace the clutch. we only had it about 5 months when it started to go out. apparently, the previous owner was a bit of a clutch rider.
there are no guarantees with any used car, but if it still has warranty and you don't want to sink $$ into repairs, i'd do what newport suggested and steer towards something a bit newer.

If you insist on getting a used Carrera as a DD, purchase an extended warranty for it after a thorough inspection. Get with your local dealer that you will be taking it to. See what they will offer for an EW because I'm a firm believer in having one if you own a Porsche. Good luck!
here are some pics. he said when he bought it he changed the oil and then changed it again now. he's only put 3k miles on it since he bought it. also said the exhaust tips were on it when he bought it.
i sold my e36 m3 for $9,000 flat about a year ago with 96k miles on it.
it was a 95 m3 with obd1, car needed nothing but a new home. Still i see people asking crazy prices on Roundel for the e36 m3s. i think they are unrealistic and can keep their car if they want to sell it for in the mid to high teens. Unless the car has less than 40k miles those prices are outrageous.
buying an used car is like dealing with girls. you never know what you will get.
have a PPI done and ask yourself why is this guy selling this car after 3 months of usage. If all is legit and checks out fine, that's not a bad price.

Be patient when trying to find a 996. I was about to buy a white 99 (tons of mods including aero kit, hre wheels, exhaust, SSK, alarm) for $32K with only 40K miles. The next day I found a blk/blk 02 for 35K with full bumper to bumper warranty for 2 years. If you are in CA, the only place you can buy a warranty is from the selling dealer or straight from Porsche which can run you 5gs. Trust me, you want the warranty. Many issues such as the rear main seal, oil/coolant mixing, and more.
I have to concur with all points, particularly Newport's views.
I spent a good deal of time searching for mine, and believe me I looked at a lot of pcars in the 99-04 range. You may benefit from ponying up a bit more ching for an '02 or later with lower mileage, especially if this will be your daily driver. I enjoy the heck out of mine every day and it's solid as hell.
Those tail pipes on the 99 have to go, they look like canons?
Best of luck with your search, if you can hold out to find the right pcar you'll be much happier than "settling" for an M3 now..
