02 996 v. e46 m3 as a daily driver, only vehicle?
i completely disagree.
i have been in the market for porsches seriously 4 times in the last few years. and two of those instances ended in purchases. and just two weeks ago, when i bought this last 996, i looked at 993's, 996's, and 997's.
a quick example of a few cars i looked at hard before buying:
-'96 C4 with 89k miles!!, and this car showed like a car with 89k miles (beat)asking price, was $49k
-'02 996 cabrio only 35k miles this car in real life was mint, asking price $49k (same price as car above with half the miles and 6 yrs newer, and as it was put into service in '03 it still had a CPO warranty!)
-'96 993 turbo with 50k miles, asking price was $69k, this car was beat to hell
-'01 996 turbo with 45k miles, in fairness, this car was beat as well, asking price was $59k (10k lower and 5 yrs newer!)
-03 996 turbo with 32k, asking price was $69k (7 yrs newer and in nice shape)
-'07 997 C2 with 10k miles, asking price $79k, original sticker $85k
-'07 997 turbo with 4k miles, asking $125k, original sticker $132k
i looked through ads of HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of 911's from from 1969 to 2008. i seriously inquired and researched a dozen cars including 993's, 996's, and a few 997's.
there is no way anybody could convince me that the 996 hasnt depreciated more than the 993. the 997 is still holding its value for now. we'll see when the updates come out how it fairs.
i dunno, maybe things are different on the west coast, but over here in New England, these are my FIRST HAND experiences, not uninformed internet chatter.

IMHO, 993's are always going to have a slight premium attached to them as the last of the aircooleds, but 997's so far have shown similar depreciation to 996 (at the same point in their development). Remember many of the 997's (as was the case with the 996's) are sold on three year leases. That is why you can find good deals on '95's.
I'm not sure where you are looking buy you can find NA 993's in the $20's (and they are not beat to crap '95's) and you can find real deals on 2005 997's (high $50's to $60's).

i agree with you, no doubt you can find a nice 993 in the 20's, but show me one, and i'll show you 3 or 4 just as nice 996's that are newer with less miles for the same price.
i think my main point is that, this porsche dealership clearly shows a trend for pricing the 993's higher (relatively) than the 996's.
time will tell for the 997.
sorry to the OP for the thread hijack. none of this is really that important. you will loose money with almost all cars out there. so, buy what you like and drive the heck out of it.
you can't go wrong with a p-car.
