Looking to purchase 1st Porsche as DD and looking for 996 reference..............
I'm looking to purchase my first Porsche as a daily driver. I'm no novice to the general world of automobiles. However am to the world of Porsche. I'm pretty deadset on the 996, and have ruled out the Cayman, Boxster, 993, and 997. I'm looking for a reference(s) that lists the varying 996 engines according to years........if it's okay to purchase one with a factory rebuilt motor (as I've been finding quite a few on the market with these)......the differences (as far as exterior/interior options and output) between a regular Carrera.....the C2......the C4 (I know it's AWD).....C4s....and the TT. I'm in no rush, as I'm looking for the most ideal car for me.
I thank all of you in advance for your assistance.

1999 - 2001 = 3.4 l, 299 hp, Cabs have plastic windows
2002 - 2005 = 3.6l, 320 hp, Cabs have glass windows, 2003+ has MOST bus system and because of this can be tricky in upgrading the radio.
C2 Anniversary - 3.6l, 345 hp
Turbos = 3.6l, 420 hp
The C4S has the same engine and power as a non-C4s but some of the same options as the Turbo.
For rebuilt motors - that's a personal call. I am sure others that have one can give their personal experiences with it.
For options, look up the option code list here on the site. For a DD, I personally like comfort seats with memory and seat warmers.
My personal advice is to test drive as many as you can. With each one you look at - you will learn what 'suits' your needs and will have a hell of a lot of fun in the process
I would suggest driving the following
Manual 6 Speed vs Tiptronic
Cab vs Coupe
C2 vs C4 vs Turbo

Def drive as many as possible. In terms of reliability - they should all be roughly the same.. and all fairly good (for a limited production car). Cert pre-owned (CPO) or aftermarket warranties also provide a certain piece of mind.
I went through the same process - in the end I liked the AWD, sport suspension, and bigger brakes of the C4S... ok, ok and the widebody. There is no finer ****...

Yes, I too like the 996 C4S ****.

As it currently stands I'm leaning towards the C4S or a C4 with a aero kit, as I reside in the mid-atlantic, and although we don't get a considerable amount of snow........we do get some.......in addition to a lot of rain (as of late). I'll be replacing my S4, which is currently my DD, and I definitely like how sure footed the AWD is when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
I did all the research not long ago...
and here's a helpful forum: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...d.php?t=414586
As a daily driver, the 996 was my choice ... mostly as the best value for money... so then I considered the narrow body versus the the wide body ('S' models & turbo).
For me, the widebodies are the sweetest. (Not really a concern for me, but many say the widebodies will have better resale value-- I bought mine cause I looove the curves).
The rear end is sweet:

Turbo's were beyond my range -- as in the range that I had negotiated with my wife
So the C4S or C2S were the contenders.
Next consideration: all wheel drive.
Living in Canada, with variable weather, I valued the C4 and PSM (PSM standard in all C4, C4S and turbo models).
(If you want the reassurance of PSM it is still an option on C2 models, but not as common... and you can always turn it off.)
Note that the all wheel drive models have less trunk space up front due to the extra mechanicals, and some more weight. But for me, in real world conditions (that being somewhat rural BC), I have been through rain storms, light snow, dusty roads and the all wheel drive is great.
I love the C4S.

I went from a V8 S4 to a 996. Best thing I have ever done. Love the car. You will not regret it. If you do not get any snow in VA, I'd opt for a C2, there is monster amount of grip in the back with proper tires like AD07 or PS2's
It's easier than your Boxsters? How so, can you elaborate please?

Thanks for forwarding me to rennlist.com, I recently just joined and became a member not even a week ago. I appreciate and thank all of you for all of your insight, references, and real world experience that you've provided thus far.
The more and more I look, the more and more I'm leaning towards the C4s.
