Removing the amber from headlights
Removing the amber from headlights
I have an early 99 996 with the amber embedded plastic turn signals.
I'm curious if anyone has used smoked gray film and how it would look with an Arctic Silver car. Would the turn signal lights be visible and would you need to change bulbs? Degree of dificulty installing etc.
Want to avoid replacing headlights....expensive.
Thanks for your input.

Your owners manual should have detailed instructions for pulling the headlight assembly out of the car and changing the individual bulbs. If I can do it, anybody can do it! I suppose you could find a modification to accomplish your goal. Will changing the bulb work?

Forget the gray film. You have to get inside the headlamp with a soldering iron and start breaking up/cutting up the amber pieces and then remove them with needle nose pliers and a vacuum cleaner hose. I did this. It is not the easiest thing to do, and you have to be very careful with the hot soldering iron not to burn the headlamp or yourself. More detailed instructions can be found in www.ppbb.com. Search for "amberdectomy." You'll need to replace your clear bulbs with amber bulbs (preferably silver coated amber ones) for them to flash amber once you remove the amber reflectors.
True true.. Unless you are talking about the headlights that are not even remotely clear with a dark amber turn signal. Then you need to replace.
Not sure the amberdectomy will work on 99 headlights...no?
looks like replacement might be the best solution to me

Oh you're right. 99 through early 2000 had amber lenses at the bottom, not just clear lenses with amber reflectors like the late 2000 - 2001's. Mine is a 2001, so I just did the amberdectomy. So the solution is to buy used headlights with just amber reflectors (from someone who switched to litronics), or new 2001 headlights, then do the amberdectomy.
