Supercharger help needed, please...

Ok, lurker more than poster, needs help, please.

I just had a VF-SC kit installed on my 2000 996 (e-gas), and just can't get the car to run smooth.

I had a new MAF put in, but for some reason I can't get idle to run consistent, especially when I come to stand still at lights. Seems to spike up and drop to point of stalling repeatedly. Also, if I open her up, the throttle sometimes dies completely and I need to restart the car to restore throttle. Any ideas please help.

I would first check for vacuum leaks and any leaks around the intake tubes and the connection to the throttlebody. Did the install include an inline resistor to modify the MAF signal? Do you have a scanner? Who did the install?

EU Autowerks in toronto did the install, they are a respectable Porsche shop here. When they first did the install there was a small leak which they fixed, and the car ran well for a few days. We installed the resistor provided by Delius of VF. I don't have a scanner but last time we scanned it after it threw a CEL, all numbers read normal except it recorded a P1128 and P1130. I red-lined it in third yesterday and did a very hard cutoff, threw a CEL disabled the throttle again until I restarted it. Do you guys think it could be fuel, air or ecu related?

I promise you that is most likely a vacuum issue. At least get a boost/vac gauge that will let you know. Better yet get an air/fuel meter with multi function inputs. I have the Innovative LM1. Works like a charm and gives you a ton of data. Bolt on kits are great but it is in your best interest to have a fairly nice monitoring device. It;s not like blowing a 350 in the camaro ; too much money to reg an engine of this type without being able to keep an eye on things.

If DTC P1128 or P1130 (oxygen sensing at rich threshold) is stored in the memory, this means that the fuel/air mixture is too lean.
Air leaks ahead of the oxygen sensors can lead to a fault in adaptation.
1. Check exhaust system for leaks.
2. Check for air leaks in intake air system
3. Check fuel pressure.
4. Check volume supply of fuel pump.
5. Fuel injectors fouled.

hey 911toronto! i have the similar issues with my car right now.
it's not as bad as your case but very similar issues (car not idling right at idle, after i clear the CEL the car won't even idle, keeps on dying after a few seconds starting the car)

i talked to VF and RPM North and we suspect a leak somewhere.
i would 100% recommend a A/F ratio gauage since that was the most obvious thing that cued to the leak. my A/F ratio at idle was too high (the system running too lean)

Hope this helps. Keep up posted on what your shop says. I know how you fee buddy, after spending so much money and not have the car run right is a total bummer.

My car is in the shop now getting fixed. i'll keep you updated on whether or not it was as leak. i should know in a few days

Jason

Hooking a scanner up will give you the same info as an A/F gauge will. Get a scanner. You should have, as with all mods, had a scanner and recorded engine sensor readings prior to installing the SC.

Its one of two things, the car is not getting enough fuel or there is a vacuum leak, you need to know the AFR to really see where the problem is.Take it back to Courts and he will be able to find it.When the SC work on the car they work well, but more then others they are a PIA.

One question what fuel are you running in the car?

Ok guys, quick update.

Took the car back today, Corurtney ran a leak test and he found a very small one, which he believes is not the core of the problem, something more disturbing awaits. It seems that while I have a repeat P1128 and P1130 performance, I have a new visitor, P1508!

Guys, this is a DME code, book says replace DME! Courtney thinks this is my hard cut-off problem, where the ecu reads a torque comarison function and come back, well not right! He thinks it may be my screw-up!

I informed Delius my car was non-egas, well, it IS e-egas. Delius said it didn't matter, cause their computer can tell the difference! I am going to write Delius about this and keep you guys posted.

The real issue I have is if I push the car beyond 6Krpm in second, third or fourth, it starts cutting gas and then I would have to restart car to regain gas. This is getting to be a safety issue, especially when on the highway!

Hey guys, any of you ever experienced this? Also, scanner reccomendations?

Thank you.....Fadi.

Oh, running Sunoco 94 in her.

hmmmmm...according to this its the ICV or the e-gas body...

This might be Jasons' problem as well.

Thumbs up

i'm sad =(
my vf kit is not running right
RPM north did a smoke test to see if there were any leaks and they found one on a hose and changed the clamp, that was fixed
but they found a huge leak coming out of (i forget the name, but it's the plastic trim that splits up the air after the plenum)

i can't pass NY state emissions if i keep on getting these CEL and my car is like breaking down. i've had SOOO many issues since my SC install (i dunno if they are related) but battery died, water pump is dying, my car did have a RMS leak but now is getting worse, another oil leak from above the cam sensor, CEL lights consistently, and now a air leak.

i need some cheering up guys. it seems that this VF kit really beat my car. talk about spending 14k to blow up your car

Hey Jason,

I know the feeling believe me, my car ran like a Swiss watch prior to the SC kit, now it seems plagued with issues. I don't feel confident driving it, or stepping on it in case it kills the gas in the middle of the highway... In fact, I toyed with the idea of ripping out the SC and just junking it, especially when my 91 Miata (after market turbo) seems a lot more reliable. I really miss my old 911.

However, on the odd occasion when I step on it, and the SC kicks in second, sending that beautiful tail wiggling, feeling behind the wheel of car way more capable than its driver, being humbled and excited at the same time makes me believe in what other SC owners have (like DepDog) and the pleasure I can get out of this setup once sorted.

So far VF has been cooperative with trying to figure out my problems and I hope we can solve them soon.

I know its tempting Jason, but you really can't blame the SC for a failing battery or water pump, we have high performance cars and as such they would need more TLC than your average grocery getter, hang in there buddy.

Fadi

Just so you understand Jason, you have an intake manifold that is leaking. On the smoke test the smoke comes from the base of the intake manifold. This leak will cause you to receive the check engine lights that you are getting. The oil leak that you have is coming from the rear main seal mostly. The water pump leaking is also non supercharged related part. The supercharger is not putting any more load or wear and tear on the components that you are having a problem with. If you take a look around you will find that these problems are not all that uncommon.

Your VF kit is running great though, you are making a lot of horsepower, you are having no driveability issues and the supercharger is acting exactly how one would expect it to. You know exactly what is wrong with your car, you know exactly how to fix it, unfortunately it does require your car being down for a week or so but at least you know what the problem is. It could be a lot worse Jason, you could be driving around and not have a solution to your problem, that's what would drive me crazy.

Don't worry though, winter is here and we will get all these problems resolved soon. You are gonna have a great time on the turkey run next week and after that we are going to give your car some TLC. I will give you a call in the next couple of days to go over what we will do after the turkey run.

-Craig
