I took a while, and I was wondering when this would happen, but my wife finally expressed "displeasure" with my car obsession. She's never said a word over the past year of mod mania, but I was thinking about getting some Champion RG5 Monolites and wanted to run it past her prior to pulling the trigger since it's a fair amount of cash.

She said she thought this obsession with changing out pieces of my car is becoming unhealthy and she's worried about me. She said it is the same as it was with our boat, nothing but cash rushing out the door, and I need to set a budget and stick to it.

I'm left looking inward and trying to do some soul searching. Should I stop the mods or at least slow down? It is a lot of money. These weekend fun runs and time speant learning DIY techniques cut into quality family time don't they? Should I back off a little? Or should I just divorce the *****? Trying to come between me and my car. Who does she think she is

 

Tough question . . . my wife has been supportive of wheels, and even likes the new muffler. Of course I support her horse habit--not that I ever mention that, but she is pretty appreciative (and horses are at least as much of a drain if not more!)

Good luck. Perhaps if you have a list of mods so she can see that there is an end in sight.

I've told her I'm almost done. She rolls her eyes and says "no you're not. You'll never be finished". She sees inside me. It's spooky.

 

Set a budget? Out of all the left over money at the end of the month, X% can go to a car mod account?

 

So long as it is not threatening the "well being" of your family, I don't think you need to really change what's going on. If you've got the cash, support the economy!

should always set a budget for anything you do in life. even the things done just for ***** and g!ggles unfortunately

 

Don't let a budget crimp your style, if you have the means and you’re not taking money from your family commitments then go hard. I always find that pleading for forgiveness is much easier than actually asking for permission. I recently bought 996 GT3, didn’t tell the wife until the day I picked it up. She got over it in a week, now she is thinking the Boxster S is hers, and all is forgiven.

Deck I can't say that I can share your pain since my missus is pretty chilled with my PCar obsession however I make sure that I spend quality time with her and my lil angels.

It's all about finding that equal balance at the end of the day - for instance for me mid time takes place over winter since I tend to have far more time on my hands after spending time with the family and that includes our dobe.

 

I think two things are needed here, set a high budget and don't refer to your wife as a *****, she doesn't deserve that title.

Man I hit that wall many times-first with my nissan which I modded to hell and now the M3. And on top of that I have a bundle of joy on the way so the wife doesnt want me spending on cars/electronics etc all the stuff we men like.
Modding can be seriously addictive. I spent many a weekend/weekday under my car/gawking at the engine/detailing and reading about the next project. Going from a japanese to a german machine the cost of modding can get very expensive. There's been times when I've had several large boxes arrive within a week and wife will then get suspicious. Now I'll order parts and make sure they arrive weeks apart.
I think I'll try what PolarPorsche had done - buy my next car 997GT3 or R8 and tell the wife the same day I drive up in it LOL.

 

The first 2 weeks are the worst. After that, you won't miss her. Keep modding!
