Brake pads for street/track

I am going to be changing my brakes soon. I'm going with dba slotted fronts and the stock cross drilled rears. What brake pads would be good to use if I plan to do a few track events a year but mostly street driving. Hawk, cool carbon, pagid, .....?

What's a few, 3? There really is no good pad that does both (I would have bought it). But if its really only a few a year Performance Friction makes a nice Carbon pad, Pagid has the "s" line. I've only used Hawk race pads and have no info on their street stuff.

You may want to consider getting two sets. I can change mine out on 45 minutes.

heh, every single car forum I participate on has this topic come up a few times...

It's really sad, most street performance pads fall apart at track temperatures (the Hawk HPS and HP Plus are TERRIBLE for this) and just about all race pads are either super short lived or eat rotors like no tomorrow, all of them dust and squeal and most of them suck when they're cold.

In short there are really no good examples of pads that will do real track duty and real street duty.

The Ferodo DS2500 does a pretty good job of this, and for cheaper, so does the Axxis Ultimate. I've tracked both (and I instruct with a few clubs in the Bay Area) and I have to dial my driving back a little but they allow for plenty of fun as long as you have good braking habits. the Ferodo DS3000 allows a bit more fun at the track at the expense of shorter life on the street and a whole lot more dust and some squealing.

If you aren't used to much track stuff, and are driving slow, the stock pads do fine on the track, and I'd recommend them over most high performance street pads.

Go with the Porsche Performance pad. It should hold up to 2-3 track events (assuming the track is not super hard on brakes) and are good for the street. They are also very affordable.

I was wondering if porsche made a performance pad and I'll assume I can go buy these at the dealer? Any clue to part numbers or prices on these pads?

I was suprised at how good the OEM pads actually worked for track applications while I was still on street tires. Don't get me wrong I could still work them too hard BUT with a little common sense they did a much better job at the track then I thought they would.

I've since gone to more serious tires, and track specific pads and just swap them out for each event.

I'd think the Porsche Sport pads would be a good solution but I have no first hand experience. Here's a link to them.

Ya I'm still new to driving on the track so I'll end up going with the porsche sport pads and let you know how they work out. As far as the rotors, I can't afford two piece rotors so should I stick with the stock cross drilled or go with dba slotted rotors or something similar? Any suggestions?

Porsche OEM pads are really very good as long as you are running street tires. These are still the number one choice of top SCCA drivers in stock class. If you are running Hoosiers you should probably swap to a race pad for track days. I have 16k miles, 8 track days, 3 AX days, 4 PDS days on this set of stock pads and they are just now to the wear sensors. I am putting on a fresh set this week. I have never experienced brake pad fade on this car but I have boiled my brake fluid twice. Change the fluid every year.

Caveat: I am kinda old, kinda slow, I drive a little 2.5L pea shooter and I carry all the momentum I can get through the corners. I don't use the middle pedal much. I prefer the one on the right .

I run street tires and have no complaints on the brake pads that are on the car. At the two HPDEs and 3 ax i attended last year I did not notice brake fade and the car performed great. I have the brake fluid changed twice a year to pass tech inspections for pca/bmwcca track events.

porsche performance pads are good and affordable and work well if you tracking little.. (great price)

otherwise... go with pagid yellows... the stopping power these things have is incredible... and you can use them on the street... they work better after 1,000 miles on them once they have been broken in...

Don't worry about rotors. The stock ones are just fine.

Thank you all for the input. I will probably just stay with the stock rotors and probably the porsche sport pads and upgrade to stainless steel lines. You have all be very helpful and appreciate the advice.

There is a group buy on the 2pc Performance Friction rotors. I've got mine sitting in the garage now... just need time to install before the first event next Wed...
