high mileage
I just bought a 2000 C2 Hard-Top convertible, it's got 107,000 miles on it but seriously it's in perfect condition. It was only serviced at the dealer it was bought at in San Jose (CA) and i bought it from the original owner.
I am jumping back into Porsche after years of BMW ownership. I have an elderly gent that took this '99 911 in on a trade on a Ferrari that he owned last year. All indications are that he is an experienced, and savvy car aficiando and the guy that traded him the Porsche was as well.
The car is cosmetically a 7.5 and with some minor detail work will be a 9+.
The engine runs well, it has a clean carfax, and all indications point to it being a solid runner with no known issues. The value of the car we have agreed is $13k. He is taking my BMW in on trade, and I am adding cash to get to the value.
Additionally, he is driving the car 200+ miles to deliver it and make our trade.
My thinking is that this might be a very fair deal. A car that has this mileage is past the time an engine is going to blow up, and any inherent "legacy" issues have been sorted out previously. I feel and the issues forthcoming will be primarily maintenance and upkeep. Am I nuts? Is my thinking flawed?

. On a realistic note though, I'd agree with what you're saying. Seems safe enough to me. Worst case, at 155k I imagine it'll need a clutch eventually, just throw the IMS in at that point for peace of mind if you feel the need!

As I write this, my detailer is getting the original paint to absolutely "pop" and the interior is also looking amazing!
Photos will follow soon! I have joined the 996 Club!

Welcome to the 996 group. I bought a 996 C4 with a little over 100K miles and that was a year ago and it is running just great. Couldn't be happier. A friend bought an '03 Cab with 100K miles 2 years ago and it now has 190K and running like a champ
Regular maintenance and oil changes is the key. Find a good mechanic and make sure that he is constantly performing preventative maintenance to avoid or minimize problems
Take care of your Porsche and it will take care of you

You bet....I couldn't agree more. I have been a BMW enthusiast over the years and am compulsive about the oil changes and preventative maintenance. I am pumped with the 996 and my detail guy has done an amazing job. I will be loading a few photos tomorrow...thanks for the comments and thumbs up!
All types of sports cars have models with engine failures. I wouldn't even begin to think of the IMS as severe as a problem as some of you guys make it out to be. The b6 & b7 Audi S4's have timing chain system failures that typically range anywhere from $8,000 - $12,000 for the V8 4.2L motor.
I have read enough good things about the reliability of the C4S, that it will in fact be my next car.... I just can't decide if I want to buy a cheaper 996 or let the 997's depriciate a little more before buying one.

I have a 04 C4s, had it for three years and not a single issue yet. Very reliable and I don't DD the car. She sits for over a week at a time and all winter long and never had an issue.
Bought my '99 three years ago and it drives great! I've had a lot of fun driving it. Just the other day, the odometer passed the 141k mark and the car is still tight! If you're going to buy a Porsche, drive it! Don't let it sit in your garage saving mileage accumulation. Life is too short, if you don't drive it, someday, someone else will. That, my friends, is from experience. Right now I have mine up for sale, not because I'm tired of it. It was on my bucket list to one day own a Porsche. Now it's time to check off another item on my list and that's owning another motorcycle. I'm 63 yrs old and I want to experience all that I can. The last item on my list is a Super Lite kit car. Hopefully that won't take too much longer to acquire!
