For those who have installed the B&M

I am planning to install this weekend and was wondering if I could get a few points. In reviewing the directions, there are certainly graphics and instructions which seem vague or hard to visualize. I have heard numerous occasions that this is a very straight forward install, however I am just a bit nervous to start taking apart the interior especially since once you take the stock shifter out, you can not install it again.

I also noticed that someone put a film together of the install. Where can I get it if possible?

Local Boxster/996 owners got together and filmed B&M installs on 4 cars, plus other projects.

I am always looking for more local San Jose owners. We started filming new projects last Saturday for another set of DVDs. Jeff

Here are the 'poster boys' for the 996 installs, Colin and Chad, who post on this board.

For a short while we sold an individual DVD, but it seemed that everyone wanted the set of 3. Jeff

That is a major misconception, you can easily go back to stock, with a couple of methods.
A. Use the B&M bushings with the stock shifter or
B. Use the Evo true needle bearings (about$100).
I have changed the B&M out to stock and back in 30" flat. It's very easy.
One thing I have thought about, there has to be a way to remove the stock bushings without detroying them. I put forth the hypothesis that you could take some ordinary hose clamps and use them to decompress the clips that retain the stock bushings. One of y'all that performs a lot of installs out there in California should see if it works. Worth a try and can't hurt anything.

As a test I put the stock shift lever back in the shift tower with the B&M bushings. The plastic journals on the stock shift are a little bit tight in the B&M bushings, so I simply took some sand paper to them and then it was a great fit.

I have spent hours trying to get the stock bushings out w/o breaking them. Hose clamps, wire, 5 hands, and every tool I have. Don't wast your time. On the DVD you will see how we break the tabs for the bushings with a chisel, rather than a utility knife. Jeff

Is a tapping sound normal when shifting up to 1st, 3rd, and 4th?
How do I adjust the B&M for shorter throws??? Is it adjustable?
