Bank 1 is the cylinder 1-3 side, left or drivers side.

Whoops, sorry about that, did not notice that you were from the UK. Standing at the back the left hand side is bank 1 and the right hand side is bank 2. So for you Brits bank 1 is the passenter side.

If its a rear engine, DS is bank one and front engine, like a Cayenne, DS is bank 2. Right?

Unless you're in the UK or other countries with RHD.

This is why cars should use "port" and "starboard" to designate sides. Planes and boats already do.

I know some of our cars in the U.S. are as big as boats, but I don't think you'd want to add "port" to the motor vehicle vernacular. And, adding "starboard" would just give the hollyweird crowd more reason to show off. haha

Seriously, most manufacturers use "RIGHT" and "LEFT" from the driver's perspective.

"Left" / "Right" confuses some people because they are facing the car from the front while working on the engine. That's why "driver side" and "passenger side" became the norm. But when owners from the UK and Australia join in on the conversation, it makes things confusing again. I suppose new terms like "US driver's side" and "UK Passenger side" will have to be adopted to decrease the confusion. lol

Or maybe we should adopt the same terminology the theater people use such as "stage left" and "stage right" (from the POV of the audience). We should say "driver left" and "driver right" which is from the point-of-view of the driver as opposed to the technician's.

Actually, "Stage Left" or "Stage Right" in theatrical terms is from the perspective of the performers. You mean "House Left" or "House Right".

We should say "car left" / "car right" and "mechanic left" / "mechanic right"

hahaha... I'm afraid that would still be confusing. Many mechanics don't know their left from their right.
