built a rear deck sub enclosure mock-up

This is the cross section of the shape of the enclosure to fit on the rear deck. This is sloped down towards the back and does not impede the view in the rear view mirror. Now I need to determine if and what kind of subs will fit. There are some JL Audio 10" subs with a 4 7/16" mounting depth that should work but maybe some 12" will work too. I think a single 10" sub with a 300w amp should be plenty in the tiny little 996 cab, right?

Any advise or opinions?

It's a cross section of a box that will fit onto the stepped back deck behind the rear seats. The vertical piece on the right goes against the back seat. The long piece on top slopes down to the bottom of the rear window. Sub drops in from the top...

Does that help?

So according to my calculations, if I get a Polk MM1240 12" sub which recommends a .88 cubic ft. box, the target box volume will be .88 x 1728 cubic inches which is 1521 cubic inches. Add 20% to this to account for the volume of the speaker itself and I get 1827 cubic inches. The larger volume of my box is 11" x 7" by x. The smaller volume is 10" x 4" by x. So the dimension I need to determine is x, the total width of the box. 15.6 inches. How's my math?

So if I understand this, are you removing the seat cushion from the rear to fit this onto the carpet? Or are you placing it directly on the seat cushion?

Nope. This goes BEHIND the rear seats. The rear deck has two levels, so the shape of the box is meant to fit onto it, kinda like Tetris.

Oh ok. That makes sense now. I did not realize there was that much room behind there. Please take some pics as you take the car apart and also where you install it. I like this idea.

Currently I have the sub the sit on the floor but they are a nuisance there. I was thinking about giving up a rear seat but with your idea, I don't have to.

There are a number of different subs that will work depth-wise with this design, ranging from the true "shallow-mount" designs, up to and including some of the JL Audio 10" models. I like the specs, depth, and price of the Polk MM1240, so that's what I am planning on using. I think a single 12" sub will do the trick. I have an Alpine M-500 amp to drive it that is already mounted up front.

I can't find the panel that attaches to the box (with the posts that you attach the speaker wires to) anywhere locally. Any ideas? And what do you call that part anyway?

Not a Cab. A 2001 Coupe.

Did you try Radio Shack? I have seen some there. Also I found some at an online electronics store when I built my box.

Ebay definitely has them if you are patient. Otherwise as a local car audio installer

That explains it. Your first post stated a cab so I thought you were installing in that. Oh well. GL

Let's see a picture! Does the box obstruct the view in the rear view mirror at all? Seems like the JL is a little too deep for my box mock-up.
