Unhappy Oil spots on the garage floor.

Oh man. I pulled the car out of the garage and noticed some nice oil spots under the engine. (996 3.6) I can't lift it to see where it's coming from. I have scheduled an appointment with the dealer to investigate.

I hope this is not an RMS issue. Any thoughts or advice as I head for the dealer next week?

unless you recently filled the oil and spilled a little, I can't think of anythin else it could be besides an RMS Leak.

Sorry to hear about it.

My advice is to wait and see.

How many miles do you have Captain?

I'm voting for RMS, but hoping it's not... Mine went at 3 years/32K miles along with a camshaft bearing seal. Double whammy!

I have 7,500 miles on since June.

The spots are discrete drips that looks like have been accumulating over a period of time. I never noticed them as I was pulling in or out.

While it is in the shop is there any thing else I should be "noticing" so as to get a complete analysis? I am planning some mods this spring that might endanger my warranty and I would like to make sure my car is 100%.

Tal, I'm taking mine in tommorrow for an RMS. Mine never leaked a drop on my garage floor and doesn't smoke at all, the guys at RPM noted while changing some front tires.
I hope it's not, but probably is. It's no big deal, just a freakin' seal, don't worry about it. Just get it fixed and enjoy your car.
Be sure they check the clutch for oil damage and check the tolerances at the RMS, <0.030 is acceptable I believe.
Good luck
Chris

Unless the area where the seal sits is out of round, it is no biggie. Most Porsche service techs can do this repair in their sleep. Replaced the RMS on my Boxster over a year ago. End of problem.

All oil leaks are not RMS leaks. Any number of things can leak, some very minor and some not. I have had the oil pressure sending unit on the cam cover leak and it was no big deal to fix, in and out in 2 hrs. Only if the leak is dead center between the engine and tranny would I suspect a RMS leak.

If you can't stand to wait, try to slide a digital camera up under the car. Go to a point just ahead of the rear wheels and shoot it looking back and angled slightly up. You might find what you are looking for. Sounds like RMS.

Thumbs down Me too...

I just noticed the SAME THING. It must have started this weekend, as the floor is white and I'd have noticed the drops before this. I can see a little oil that appears to be seeping between the tranny and the engine. Argh.

I'm getting new pads installed, then off to the dealership. Hopefully the extended warranty will cover it. Not that expensive, just annoying.

No mods until I get this cleared up.

Sound like the RMS I had it done, this is really no biggie, and greghost the RMS issue never occured on the 993 blocks thats why the Turbo does not have this issue, PS the ghost looks very very sweet great taste!

This is where you can expect to see oil from when you have an RMS leak...

This is what it looks like under the car when you have an RMS leak...

This is what you can hope to not have to deal with when you have an RMS leak...

A couple of suggestions for you...

Ask what your concentricity is? (They will measure with a tool) Depending on what this is, (.30) you might get what is in pic three...a replacement engine; because the chance of it leaking again should you be at or above the tolerance could be rather high. A replacement engine is not the end of the world either.

Depending on the miles on your car, you might want to consider having them install a new clutch. They drop the transmission to get to the seal, so the labor is taken care of, you just pay parts for the clutch.

As well, ask for them to do an oil change...I would ask them to comp this at the very least for the inconvenience of having to go through this. Good luck!
