C2 vs. C4 996
C2 vs. C4 996
Tried to find some info on the standard C4, but there wasnt really anything at all. You guys seem to love the C4s though. What are the main differences between a 996 C2 vs. a C4? I understand AWD and all that, but im wondering what changes AWD makes in a 911...a RWD.
Ive been talking to a guy with a 99 C4 with 40k miles. Theres a few threads on here about MK1 996s with low milage tend to be trouble when you turn them from a garage queen to a daily driver. Thoughts?

different driving technique in the C4. you can flow through most curves pretty easily, but surely paying closer attention to the road at speed. with the rwd you need to pay more attention to the rear end and point steer through the apex, just like Henry Watts says. Lifting off in a tight turn in either car is not good... the C2 could slid out, and the C4 will surprise you when the psm comes on and grabs a wheel. flow, maintaining balance, and paying attn are the keys to driving both cars on curvy roads at some speed. imho, otherwise both feel pretty much the same.
I read somewhere, possibly R&T, that the C4, even with the additional weight of the awd, actually turned better flat out track times than the C2. Depending on the track I suppose.
I got mine for lots of wet weather driving, but as we don't get much if any snow, I run potenza 050 pole positions all year and like the aa traction rating for wet conditions.

I've found about 4 C4s and 4 C2s that i wouldnt mind buying if they check out/price is right. Plan 2 months ago was to buy this week...but it looks like i wont be buying till at least the third week in may.

How much of an advantage is it to have PSM? My blind thoughts are that a C2 without PSM will still be able to handle way better than a 325i or an A4. I dont really think that i'll be tracking my car at all...so i dont really plan on cutting around turns at 100+. (Still plan on driving it though)

No. Audis are notoriously nose-heavy. The Quattro system helps balance them, but FWD doesn't help them much at all. Still a rewarding 'European' drive, but nowhere close to what you could probably get out of a Porsche.
The C4 is the 'every driver's' car. The AWD lets you accelerate from a stop faster at full throttle and is more stable in poor weather. It's very confidence-inspiring for the average person, so they tend to be faster with it. A 'race' driver in good conditions can get faster times with a C2, but it requires much bigger stones to take it to the limit and keep it there. When faced with a guardrail, most folk won't take that gamble unless they feel REAL lucky, and have the wallet to back it up.
A lot of 'enthusiast' drivers tend to migrate from AWD to RWD cars because they find AWD 'boring' after a fashion. They want the thrill of 'danger' it gives them.

Since we are discussing the 996 c2 vs c4 i have a concern. I have a 2000 c2 with headers and just the silicone intake tube. my cousin has a c4 with just the k&n cold air intake. well when we take off from about 15mph i jump out ahead in 1st and through 2nd but towards the end of 2nd switching into 3rd he pulls out ahead of me a good 2 cars. WHY IS THIS???
