lightweight flywheel - impressions

just got it installed (thx akkurat) and the the ol' 996 feels really zippy. i think it'll get even better after the computer relearns my driving habits

like everyone else says there are NO drivablility issues. i also got an uprated clutch and still drives like stock. pedal action is actually lighter now, my old clutch was at the rivets

like everone says there's a rattle at idle with the clutch is disengaged BUT no one ever mentioned the much increased gear noise while driving hard. when accelerating, there is gear noise, not too bad, but the first time heel/toeing into a corner and with heavy compression/engine breaking the gear noise scared the bejezzuz out of me! the vibrations/noise is transmitted up throught the transmission tunnel, through the shifters cable all the way up to the shift ****.

so right now, i am not sure if it is a worth while upgrade in performance, downgrade in comfort. i will be getting some dynamat and applying it to the underside of the center console. if this appears to have any effect then i'll apply more under the carpet.

interesting thing, when the car is cold there is no gear noise but once the car warms up to operating temps the noises come back. can i run a heavier weight transmission oil to counteract the noise?

does anyone have any tricks to lessen the noise?

That doesn't' really sound normal to me. Give us some more details such as what type of clutch and high light of a flywheel. It sounds like something isn't secured properly. Have you had it check out?

the clutch is a stage 3 clutchmasters clutch. they use sachs bits and apply their clutch surfaces. the lightweight flywheel is made by ASCO (the same as FVD and EVO apparently).

i got the car back friday evening and noticed these symptoms over the weekend. i will be dropping by akkurat to see what they think.

to your knowledge i shouldn't be experiencing any gear noise i was talking of?

when i had the lightweight flywheel (and stronger clutch) in my 996, the chatter was pretty much only at idle and only with the clutch out. my cgt makes the same chatter from idle to appx 2k. once you get used to it, it's no big deal. but, i'm very surprised your 996 is making the chatter off idle.

This isn't too related but even my Audi rattles at idle with the lightweight flywheel, seems pretty typical for the upgrade from what I hear.

i'm not concerned about the rattle at IDLE but the gear noise when engine braking.

I dont know anything about the gear noise you speak of. Seems strange I'd get it checked out. If it feels/sounds like gears grinding thats painful!

akkurat checked it out and was confirmed that it is just added gear noise. hey, that's what the duall mass flywheel is supposed to do, get rid of gear noise and lessen vibration. a single mass wouldn't be as effective and since it is aluminum it transmits noises rather than muting it like steel.

the gears aren't grinding at all. at fwy speeds i can't hear any gear noise at all, it's only when i do heavy engine braking or when lugging the car around. well the LWF has somewhat changed my driving habits and i shift more rather than staying at low RPMs.

maybe your setup is different than mine was because the "only" time it ever made noise was at idle with the clutch out.
