Micrometer

I was looking into buying a micrometer to measure the thickness of my rotors, but only found micrometers that goes up to 1 inch. Problem is, the rotors are slightly thicker than 1 inch, so I need a micrometer that can go slightly higher. Anyone was successful in finding a suitable micrometer for this job?

Why not use something like this... It may not be quite as accurate as a micrometer, but it should get you close enough for a caliper measurement.

... and they're pretty cheap ($40).

If you're going to use calipers as pictured above you'll need to pick up a set of caliper accessories/tools to allow measurement of calipers. The attachments allow you to "reach around" the lip of the caliper to measure the center thickness. You can pick up the attachment/accessories from www.mcmaster.com

Cool, thanks for the information. My problem with using a caliper is, like you said, reaching around the lip, so if I can get an accessory to get around that, then that would solve my problem. I'll check out the McMaster.com site.

Zero the tool with two dimes in between, then put a dime on each side of the caliper and measure. Simple fix - still reasonably accurate.

Indeed, and only costs 20 cents :-) (+ the caliper, which I already have)

I bought this one at an auto parts store. It's specifically for measuring brake rotors so it is offset to fit over the lip. It costs about 30 bucks.

options

1) FYI - Chickenpluckers link didn't work
2) Search for a 1-2" micrometer. They come in all sizes and some have attachments (insead of the dimes) or even ball attachments for a few dollars.
3) Harbor freight has some, so you could bring the part in an see if it works
4) I have seen some old school micrometers on ebay cheap. Everyone wants digital these days.
5) I don't know that I would go with calipers, evertime you take a reading you get a different result.

It must have been damaged when GT3 Chuck edited it. Anyway, follow link click on:

OEM Auto Specialty>>Brakes>>Disc Brakes>>OEM Micrometer for Disc Brake Rotor

I tried putting the link in as text but everytime I previewed it turned back into a link...

A little off topic but what is the max wear the rotor can go to?

For a 996 non GT3

Wear limit
Front 26mm
Rear 22mm

Replace when they're worn to these limits. Can be machined also to:

Front 26.6 mm
Rear 22.6mm
