Engine Knocking 99 996 C2

Hey guys! question here... while driving the RPM's increased quite rapidly (had to get around a few vehicles, traffic was driving me crazy) nonetheless, after a 1/4 mile or so and a few rubber neckers behind me, I veered off the highway and onto the off ramp and waited at the end at a red light. Light turns green and I proceed, immediately after, I heard a light knocking sound, then the car shut off and I was left stranded on the side of the road, starring into the depth of the black paint of my ride... what a major disappointment! The car would not start, it acted as if the battery had drained. It would make an attempt to start but unfortunately fail in it's quest... 3 hours pass and voila! it started but I fear that my steed is wounded... as I cautiously revved the engine the sound of the knocking increased. What could possibly have had gone wrong?

Hate to say it but doesn't sound so good. There are a number of ways the engine can fail. Google "Hartec engine repairs." In a lengthy paper he discusses the problems and reasons for difficulties with the 996 engine (and others). Did you notice if it overheated or lost oil pressure? If the engine is not smoking it may be a rod. Generally catastrophic failure of a piston or cylinder causes a lot of tailpipe smoke from the bank affected. Important: Don't start it. Don't drive it. Flatbed to repair shop would be my advice to you. Please post how you make out. Good luck.

A ticking sound can indicate pending intermediate shaft failure, from what I've read. I'll cross my fingers that it's not that. Good luck.

it's in the ER now! My friends over @ Redbone Garage are taking a good look at it. Initially they thought it was a clogged lifter but after further diagnosis they felt the issue was a bit more serious... It seems that the "clicking" sound is coming from the center of the engine... I am now patiently waiting to here what the damage is to the vehicle as well as to my pocket....... Yipes!

The IMS bearing in that car can be replaced if there has been no collateral damage. If it has started to fail there may be an issue with debris having been circulated in the engine. Total failure of ims is catastophic. I'm still thinking it might be a rod but: don't know what would shut down the engine without a cel. You should read Hartec's article because if it turns out to be the failure of a system that Porsche knows is prone to do so by virtue of less than sterling design they MIGHT offer some help. As I said, the usual suspects like cylinder wall issues, d-chunk failures or piston failure cause a lot of smoke. Early ims syptoms shouldn't shut the engine down. Hoping for something minor that a technician (as opposed to a message board mechanic will grok

Have them do a borescope for you to rule this condition out before you open the engine. I would think that would be heard in the head area reather than "deep in the engine". If it is a problem of this sort it helps to have a good relationship with your dealer. At some point you may have to reach out to PNA and see if they will get involved. Hopefully it will not come to this.

I spoke with the mechanic yesterday and the lifters seem to be fine, the valve springs are ok and he reached in there and mentioned That the IMS has no play whatsoever... Pressure seems to be fine and there is no special ****tail between the coolant and oil... So I guess so far so good!!! He did mention that they were going to use a borescope today!!! Let us see what awaits!!! Thank you guys for all of the great advice and for showing care to this matter... Very meaningful!

Just got of the phone with my mechanic... I quote " there are metal shavings in your crankcase" end quote!!! The borescope comes in on Friday where he will be able to take a closer look at what is going on... This is NOT good news!!!
