one bad coil and spark plug tube leaks oil

I have one diagnosed bad coil that will cause a missfire at times.
I think I should just buy all 6 for $250 along with plugs, i also have an oil tube that leaks right onto the exhaust header, makes a smelly mess, is this common, should i have them all replaced?

The coils do go bad I would change them. I have an extra set (brand new) if you need them. Which oil tube are you talking about, haven't heard of that being a common issue..

Leaks at the spark plug tubes are not uncommon. If you are in far enough to replace the coils (and the plugs I hope) then the tubes are an easy fix.

Change the spark plug tube seals every time you change the plugs. It only adds about 30 bucks in parts and a few minutes of extra labor.

Karl,

Reading your blog, it appears that you use a transom plug to remove the tubes versus the Porsche tool. So, I gather you would recommend the transom plug as a remover in place of the Porsche tool which is a little pricey?

Thanks,

Peter k

A transom plug works as good or better than the Porsche tool at a fraction of the cost.

$1.99 at your local Menards. I found this out after I ordered one online for nearly 10x the price.

I do agree about replacing o-rings anytime you do spark plugs. However, you should check the tubes themselves for any cracking.

Yup! You can get them at any boat shop as well. I "think" mine is a 1", and it wrapped electrical tape around it 2-3x as it was just a shade too small to get a good grip. IIRC it was less than 10 bucks.

Yup, check for cracks as well. It is pretty rare to have a tube crack, but I have seen them on occasion. I keep a couple of tubes on hand just in case, but I think the same ones have been sitting in my toolbox for at least 2 years, and I've done a lot of seals in that time.

I used a 1 1/4 transom plug and shaved it down with a dremel. Do them all so you have piece of mind. It's a fairly easy job to do. Great write up on Renntech.org on how to do it.
